Number 9 Boiler Jacket Final Report to NRHS

We have written a final report in conclusion to our obligation to NRHS for their grant to recreate number 9's boiler jacket.  Thanks to Ed Lecuyer for leading this effort; he got substantial input from Steve Piwowarski and myself.

The NRHS requested a shortened version of the same report, which I edited down. The edited version will be published in the April issue of the NRHS Newsletter. The editor mentioned that publication reaches 10,000 rail history preservationists and enthusiasts.

I hope youz guyz remember that Steve H. is producing a program on the restoration of #9 and part of the production would be about the historic boiler jacket.  Not sure when the film will be released but I'm looking forward to seeing it.  Just sayin'

On page 3, paragraph 3, line 6, shouldn't the word "penetrates" be changed to "penetrants" ?

The text of that paragraph was lifted (pretty much) verbatim from the web site of the Black Oxide provider, Cleveland Black Oxide:

That said, you are probably correct, as I can not find use of "penetrates" as a noun. I think there is at least one other typo in the "final" report. I will collect these and revise the paper.

We do hope that other preservationists look at this as an alternative to paint when creating a boiler jacket. Already there has been some interest in the results we achieved and the method we employed.
