Wiscasset Airport (For Non-Commercial Flights)
« on: July 31, 2013, 06:51:29 AM »
On a serious note, what is the closest airfield to the museum?  A grass strip with about 1,500 ft would work for me as long as "guest" aircraft were allowed to tie down there and have 100LL (100 octane low-lead) available.

I think Wiscasset has an airfield; possibly even rental car service, too?

John, I found a Wilipedia item about he airport in Wisacsset. Hope it helps. Other WW&Fers probably know much more about it.

Considering no commercial carriers fly into Wiscasset, a car rental is doubtful.  I drove by there last year and the terminal isn't large.

If you want a car rental, consider flying into Owl's Head airport.  I think they have one.

Isn't the old Brunswick Naval air station a public airport now? I would think Brunswick must have a car rental place in town somewhere.

I believe there is an Enterprise rental office at one of the car dealerships on Rte. 1; they can meet a person at an address of choice.  I've used them to meet me at small airports in the past.

The former BNAS is now a public airport, but there's no passenger carriers flying into it that I know of.  Not much in the way of passenger comfort there.

I'll bet if you called the WW&F, someone would come and pick you up at the Wiscasset field. Right, guys? Guys?

Enterprise is only a few miles away (at the Ford dealership).  It'll either be 5 or 30 minutes away, based on traffic!

Yes, KIWI would be your best bet for visiting the museum.   RW 7-25 is 3397x75 with decent RNAV approaches in both directions.   AirNav webpage says rental cars are available.  Also says for short periods, they might loan you a crew car.

Here is the AirNav page: http://www.airnav.com/airport/KIWI

I recommend giving the FBO a call, and they'll give you the real skinny on what's available.   I've been in there a few times.  It's a nice field and as usual, the Maine folk are friendly.

The former NAS Brunswick (KBXM) is also available and has facilities to accommodate everything up to large bizjets.  You can also rent a car there, but you'd have a bit more driving to do to get out to Alna.

While farther away by about 30 minutes, the Knox County Airport in Owl's Head does have commercial flights, rental cars are available and....on the airport is the Owl's Head Transportation Museum with its world class collection of antique automobiles and vintage aeroplanes.
On display at the OHTM is one of the original Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Model T inspection cars.

I'm pretty sure that Owls head has a Lombard also.  As with the WW&F I have had no time to be there this year.

Also at KiWi I think the Texas Legends (p 40,B 25 P51d and a  Zero) will be there but not sure it the come in next week or this
