April 2012 work planning
« on: April 03, 2012, 11:30:42 AM »
I have been asked to post information about this weekend.  In the last few years, the Easter trains have started with a special photo freight on Saturday morning.  The plan has changed.  Much progress has been made with #9's main frame so Saturday morning we will be moving the frame over to Bay 1 and set it under the boiler.   The photo freight (with the milk car) will be run sometime next month.

And with much work to be done before the Easter event, during, and after, any and all willing and helping hands are much appreciated. I will be down on Friday to do more work to the #10, and there will be a few others there as well. Any that show up Friday or Saturday will find plenty to do.

Anticipated work for Saturday April 7:

* Morning project: If all has gone well in the past week, in the morning Jason will be supervising the move of #9's forward frame and cylinders to underneath the boiler.
* Afternoon project: Easter trains: we'll be running happy kids and families to Alna Center to find easter eggs.  The finder of the golden egg gets a big basket.  We plan to run steam, as long as the fire danger isn't Extreme (right now it's High).

Lunch is at 11 so that everybody can concentrate on the Easter Eggspress.

If it should reach class 4 by Saturday we will need the brookeville and fire crew to follow every train. Or could the railcar be used instead? Any how, Friday, I will fill the fire car with water, run it, and also make sure there are sufficient fire pumps and extinguishers on board both the car, and the train and engine.

Excellent idea! I, for one, would vote for the Brookville, as it has a greater number of qualified operators, can run in reverse for extended distances, has a good reliability record, and can easily tow the fire car. All vehicles should have both magneto phones (to protect against dead cell areas) and cell phones (to protect against fire damage to the phone line). Hopefully, part of the #10 maintenance procedures has been to check the smokebox screen.

Yes John, the 10 has gone through a kind of thorough winter maintenance procedure this winter. I took the screen outside, washed it, checked for holes etc. But, an occasional hot cinder may sneak through, or a hot ash may sneak out of the ash pan. But for the most part, we should be all set. The tubes are nice and clean, as well as the inside of the smoke box and fire box. Also noted, any minor things that I could think of, I have gone through and checked, and attempted to correct, but won't know the official results till Saturday. In any case all work done will be an improvement. I'd say as an estimate, I have spent about 40 hours on the 10 this winter, which is about 10 hours more than normal, and am expecting to get in at least another 8 or 9 hours of maintenance work done on Friday.

I hope this weekend that we can start working on a sign to put at the North end of the Head Tide walking trail. It should have been put up last fall when the walking bridges were finished.

Any idea on where the small hose is at for the 10 to hook onto the water tank on the engine? Fire danger is still a class 3, for now. Will also be equiping the cars, and engine with several extinguishers, and get them all ready to go, and put them in place tomorrow. Some switching will be needed to get the fire car out, so I will probably do that tonight, and put that in front of Bay 2.

40 seconds over Sheepscot -

This week #9's frame got more attention in preparation for moving it Saturday.  The brake blocks and tumbling shaft are all set.

Engine 10 got much work from Jason, Joe and Jonathan to be ready for Saturday's steam up.  The biggest things were lapping valves and fixing the dry pipe.

The Brookville was moved out of it's Winter slot and started up.  Jonathan found that the spark plugs were fouled and may change them.

Zack replaced a valve for the railroad's water system.  Cleaned the tank and started filling it for Saturday.

Dawn and Cindy got more Easter eggs and made a nice Easter ham supper for Saturday's crew. (Earlier they made up 8 Easter baskets to be given away as prizes)

Fred made a new sign for the WW&F r-o-w walking trail at Head Tide.

Milk Car 65 - Interior window frames were built.  Door hardware was installed inside the west doors.  Interior prime painting continued and the west doors got exterior prime paint.

This weeks crew included; Jonathan, Jason, Joe, Fred, Zack, Vern, Steve Z., Ed G., Cindy, Dawn, Bill H. and Stewart.

Work done on Saturday April 7:

* #9: The forward frame was moved over to underneath the boiler, then jacked up and attached to the rear frame.  The boiler and frame will stay up on blocks during the summer while frame prepatory work continues.
* Easter Eggspress: #10 was fired up and pulled the Easter trains.  The railcar was used as the fire train.  There were more than 300 people riding the train.

The 347 people that attended the Easter event was amazing. The event went from an average of around 110 people per year, up to a 300+ person event in one year. That's incredible. Many, if not all of the people that attended the event left happy. And to haul 347 people with only the 4 scheduled trains, was great. Things are in the works to make the event even better next year.

Also noted, the Brookeville got four new spark plugs.

During Sat. morning Eric S. and his son Ben and I finding nothing to do, built a 40 foot stageing on the back of the freight shed so scrapeing and painting can be done on the Spring work weekend.
