Some Questions from a New Member
« on: January 17, 2011, 03:29:08 PM »
Joe, here, "from away", with an idea that I'd like to model the "new"  W.W. & F. as a tourist line.
It seems an easy place to start.

Would a car barn have been on that part of the RR that you have rebuilt?  And what's it's use?

I have the video that appeared on NPR;  are there more videos?  And how to get them?

I see Sheepscot Station, but wonder what is the other larger building that houses the engine
Would that originally have been located in that same place?

Is there a plan that shows your intentions with the rebuilding of the line?  And how to get it?

I'm looking for a model of Sheepscot Station, or darwing, and have so far struck out.

Finally, I like to use peel & stick doors and windows, and wonder who sells them in O.

Thanks for ANY information you can provide!

JR,  (Joe Raymaker)

Hi Joe, welcome aboard!

I'll take a shot at your questions.

Sheepscot, in the days of the original railroad, consisted of a station building, a small freight shed, and a stub siding. There was no yard, no engine house, etc. This was all rurual farmland in the early 1900s.

Sometime later (I forget the year) the station building and frieght shed burned. The railroad moved a small storage shed to Sheepscot to serve as the new flag stop. The frieght shed was never rebuilt.

When the railroad ceased operations, the station/shed was sold to someone local, who used it as a shed near the north end of the yard.

When the museum started, a replica of the original Sheepscot station was constructed. Later, a replica of the Weeks Mills freight shed was built. (No good photos exist of the Sheepscot frieght shed.) Finally, an extension was added to the shed to accomodate passengers.

Meanwhile, the shed/2nd station was located and brought to the Sheepscot grounds. It now is used as a shed.

The Engine house/car shop is a representation of the landmark car shop that stood in the maine yards of the WW&F on the Wiscasset warterfront. Our building is now about 1/2 the size of the original, and has seen several expansions (with one more planned.)

Yes. See the Gift shop page of the web site.

Yes. See:

I think we sell one in the gift shop.

No ideas from me.

The original railroad had a two-track car barn in Wiscasset, along with a 3-track machine shop.  We built a smaller size replica of the shop, at Sheepscot.  We do plan to build a two-track barn in the "north yard" in the next several years.

Glad you asked!  Please visit the website http://www.wwfry.org and click on the Museum Gift Shop link.  There's a number of videos and books that you can purchase.  We'd be happy to ship them to you.

What was originally at Sheepscot was nothing more than a single-ended siding, the station building, and a small freight shed.  See my statement above about the original car shop.

Yes, we have a Long Range Plan, available on the website.  At the website, click on Major Projects and on the left you'll see a menu with "2005 Long Range Plan".  It's a PDF.  There's also a Sheepscot Site plan, which isn't on the website but I think you can find on the forum here, somewhere.

We sell a model of Sheepscot/Alna Center station in our giftshop.  Sorry, I can't tell you who makes it.  I believe it's for HO.  I don't follow much modeling, but there is a model-oriented magazine called Maine Two Foot Digest  (it used to be a quarterly magazine, now it's a yearly); there's also email and on-line discussions elsewhere that can help you with modeling.
