Steve,
It’s a Thrush glass pack. Who knew they still make them.

Looking at picture from the bridge I am assuming that from bridge south is getting a coating of fill?

Yes, Casey got a new Cerry Bomb. I forgot to mention that.. Much cheaper than a regular muffler. Total coat for the repair was only $35..

Close Paul..forgot to take this picture yesterday.

Did a little wood hauling, just to get the stuff out of contractor Jeffs way. Still lots of logs up there. Maybe we will get them out before the track goes down.

Also did a quick leveling after I ran the loader back to Sheepscot.

And tested the depth of the ditch. With the sickle bar attached to the Kubota (winter modification), it should just about reach the bottom of the ditch..

Really wore out that grass yesterday.

Since youz guys now have more flatcars, and hopefully not be in Jeff's way, I'd run a wood pickup special some weekend as da track reaches Da Bridge, and be done with it.
Fred would be busy til next Easter, and loving it!

Superb grading, BTW.

Mt Extension pictures from today.

Contractor Jeff has the grade leveled out with some 4 inch minus gravel. Very bony stuff..

I fixed the fill on the curve today. Then did a little dozing.

Absolutely pro-looking grade work done by two experts!
Looks close to done.

Bravo!

2 questions:
Will the grade be tapered up to the bridge on a long angle?
Has any thought been given to the idea of pre-staging bundles of ties, along the r.o.w. by driving through the bridge using the Copeland truck, say early the week before FWW?
My thought being, some ties could be laid ahead of the rail crane car, saving space on the car for rails. Then when the flatcar goes south for more rail, a remaining crew could place another group of ties; maybe volunteers not actively spiking. Actually, why not place all the ties ahead of dropping the rails in plce?

We don't have the manpower for One and we want to put down road cloth as we go along. We have too many things going on at Sheepscot right now. As soon as the new parking lot is done we want to move thing around. Half the ties are at the TOM where we can't get to them by truck. Were going to try a new way to get ties on the Fall work weekend. A lot will depend on the weather from now until the FWW.

The right-of-way looks great.  Thanks for the photos, Mike.
What–me worry?

The track laying system is designed to distribute ties in a consistent manner which maximizes labor usage.  It’s very important to retain that consistency so we don’t run into unexpected efficiency problems, and keep the work flow consistent and predictable.

Edit: put in practical terms, our volunteers will have their hands full prepping for work weekend as it is!

Thanks,
Jason

Right-of-way looks a little squishy in yesterday's pix. Will the mud be a problem?

Contractor Jeff is going to dump a load of 4 inch minus on the curve to spread out. Only really the top of grade that is slick with the Alna clay.

The bridge approach on the south side has to come up a little more, about 6 inches or more. The gravel ramps to the bridge will be removed, and replaced with 6 inch rock and topped possibly with 1 1/2 stone to fill the voids for drainage. The goal is to make it level with the bridge. The North side needs about a foot, and will be built out level until it tapers into the existing grade.

Any exposed soils within the shoreland zone get covered with 6 inch stone, unless we have a slope of 3 to 1, which we can cover it with topsoil, which will be the trail side, about 100 feet from the bridge.

Beyond that to the north, there is one high spot I want to cut out where the siding will be. And clean the ditches a little more to the rock. I had left them higher than I should, pitching up from the culverts too quickly, but wanted the water to run. So just a couple hours cutting part of them down, and that will do it. Plus I'll have the loam to back the fill in places.

Things are really coming together.  Mike and Jeff have done a great job, as usual.

I was amazed last year at how smoothly the tie and rail laying went, and the follow along spiking.

I wouldn't suggest changing a thing unless the track laying experts come up with a better idea, which I am at a loss to predict.
