Thanks Brendan for the photo's, it looks like it's not that far to the bridge. The stakes and photos really help show the work still to be done.

Hey Gary,

We need to purchase spikes, bolts, and washers still. Everything else is hopefully on hand. (Depending on condition of the joint bars)

The bridge is around 1000' from the end of track. MP8 will be remeasured once the grading is complete and an accurate measurement can be placed. Once this is done we will install MP 8.

Time to revive this thread.

Today, I installed the pipe in the ditch, ahead of next weekends stoning. Please do not step on the pipes. Covering them with even the minimal stone in the pictures will support your weight, but pipe alone will not.

Then, to end of track.

Looking North from End of Track. Stump on left of grade will be shown closely in the next few pics.

Getting it loose

Almost...

The Kubota may not be the prettiest excavator, but it will do the job if you work at it long enough. Took me about 20 minutes

Filled back in..looking North

Looking South

Then I started ditching. The curve has been eased slightly, so that gave me lots of room on the east side to create some significant ditches, and use the tailings as fill at location 10.

And north of location 10. I have more to dig here, but need the dozer to push..

Got to pull your own weight around there too. No traction in and out of the hole..

And I did a little trimming..

We all know that you do literally tons of stuff, but you shouldn’t show the same picture twice (8 and 9). We former newsletter editors notice that sort of stuff. 🤗

How much more digging needs to be done before you reach the bridge?

I have to reconstruct the ditches through the curve, then touch up the grade when Contractor Jeff is done. Hoping that I we don't need much fill when I am done ditching. Pretty soft up there and not sure Jeff would back in that far. I am also hoping to do some preballasting..as well as bury some wire. Going to be a great summer..

Started off this morning, with the help of Ken Berlo, off setting all the center line stakes, and a couple of reference stakes, like the frog and some measurement stakes. Then went to work with the Kubota.

Contractor Jeff showed up, and we looked the ditch over. He figures in about 2 weeks he may get to it. He rough guessed the same amount of material that I had figured. It will take him a few days to do.

Had a flat surface, so I loaded it. Fred is getting antsy, wanting to cut, so next Saturday, he will get these..

Setting the rest of the culvert at Location 10

I have been filling the hole a little at a time with the better material from the ditches. The topsoil with the roots have been cast aside to cover the slope when I finish.

A look at the ditch I have created to get some material.

I could see the bridge from the Kubota at that spot..

Picking roots from the ditchings and this showed up. I didn't beat the rust off, but appears to be a broken joint bar.

Dana and I scooted up first thing and got the equipment car, and had it back and unloaded by 8. We then shoved the rail crane and flat car ahead enough to load the dozer, then returned the crane to the spot it was occupying. Mean time, Fred had already cut a couple bucket loads of wood before we could head north.

After dropping the dozer at end of track, Dana cut some bushes and I tossed them in the woods while we waited for the train. I then saw one of Freds Burma Shave signs and decided to repurpose them. The 300 Ft got damaged and tossed, but I found the rest. Spaced every 300 Feet..

I dozed for about 10 minutes, then loaded the equipment car for hopeful pick up this week.

I then de-turfed the curve, hoping it helps dry it out.

I only had a couple hours this morning, so only got the east ditch done. Found 3 spikes..

The weekday crew has trimmed to the bridge. Much improved..

Here is the current view of the big ditch that Contractor Jeff will be lining for us.

Looking North toward the bridge

South toward Sheepscot

The ditch and grading today..
Looking South

After grading, looking south at location 10. I was trying to carry the material to location 10 but had to build the spot just past the kubota up about 6 inches on the west side.

Still looking south, from just south of location 11
