Alex, thank you. 1400 may be possible, but 1200 would put us just over this culvert. We have not done any realtree clearing beyond the pipe, but limbing would give us the clearance to pass through.

As for the rail, I am going to make a small display right where they were found. Once I ditch there, possibly Saturday, I am going to set the rail on 2 tie cut offs, which I have just inside the pipe.

1400 is our goal, and to put it simply, if we achieve our goal of 1400 feet, 2019 Fall Work Weekend will see tracks extend across Trout Brook as early as Sunday afternoon. Anyone able to join us this year please do so, and feel free to tour the work zones at your discretion. Pictures do not do justice.

Isn't there a piece of original rail at Alna Center that could also be put on display next to the station?

The rail is there. It fell off the wood blocks and is now hidden in the weeds.

Thanks for the great "update pics". The work you and others have done on the roadbed is really top notch. And the view of the retaining wall you created is really nice. The museum is quite fortunate to have the collection of highly talented members and friends doing all of this rebuilding.

I think all the original rail should be brought down to Sheepscot to make up a display section of track.

Are you going to stop just giving us pictures of Cross Road? This teasing isn't fun!

More great work!  8)

Does the grading go past Location 10? I thought you mentioned you had completed that location a few weeks ago... or was Contractor Jeff waiting for Location 9 to be finished so he could put the fill in and dress location 10.

I say let Fred loose with a chainsaw on Section 5.....tell him there is a case of Moxie (or his preferred beverage) at the north end of Section 5 with his name on it.

Any thought of running the grade with a stone rake just to integrate all the wiffles and provide a good, smooth surface for the fabric before the track is layed?

A reasonable estimate for 6000 track feet of rail would be $120,000 at todays rail price.

$70,000 for ties, spikes and culverts.

$100,000 to repair two large washouts and one major landslide.

$60,000 in excavating and ballast costs.

$30,000 for the queen truss bridge over Carleton Brook (this may be high)

Total is $380,000.

If we used annual fundraiser for next 7 years just to extend track, we could be at Rt 218 in 6 to 7 years.

But as you know we have other needs to provide for.

This old post from 9 years ago was interesting enough to look back and contemplate considering the bridge is almost in place and just about all the grade is done to Rt 218 and there's enough rail and materials piled at the museum to get there.... Would be interesting to compare the actuals against the estimate.

Allan way underestimated the cost of a new bridge.  I think even if it was assembled on site, it would cost more.  The turntable, also a queen truss bridge, cost around $40K.  Trout Brook is longer, and required a fair bit of prep work on site.

All the work that Jeff did, which includes the landslide, cost about $25,000.  I think most of that was landslide.  However he we'd have him do everything that Mike did, it probably would cost at least $100K.

I'm sure this is a much better roadbed now than any of the original 2 footers ever dreamed of! Great job!
