James Patten wrote:When this forum went down over the weekend, I ended up creating a new forum, based off our website.
The new forum address is http://forum.wwfry.org.
By the end of the day I will be locking down this forum so that nobody can add new posts. We will be able to return to this forum and look up information if need be.

Scot Lawrence replied:Since this one is back, and has tons of old posts still intact,
why not keep THIS one and close and delete the new one?
the new one doesnt have anything of great relevance yet, since its only one day old..THIS forum IMO is of much greater importance than the new one..as far as archived discussions and information is concerned.
or..if you really want to keep the new one, because of where and how the new one is hosted (if that is better than the host of this forum, if you think this forum hosting is too unreliable)
can all the old topics be migrated to the new forum?
either way im sure will be fine..
but if the new forum could continue-on with all the old topics intact, in one place, by either just keeping this one or migrating the topics to the new one, im sure everyone would be very gratefull!
thanks,
Scot
Stephen Hussar replied:Scot, I believe James and Ed are looking into bringing the content from this forum over to the new one. It may be possible to do, but since this forum is hosted free, there could be a fee involved. While I like this format a little better, I think it is preferable to have the board (literally) attached to the museum's website... and this one, is not.
elecuyer replied:There are far too many advantages to having the forum hosted on our own server, versus a free host. I think this outage was a wake-up call to that effect.
I will be trying to mine the data from the old forum. Unfortunately, a simple backup/restore is not possible (without paying a fee, and no guarantee that it will actually work.)
Thanks,
-Ed
John McNamara replied:Does anyone know what the "fee" for posting transfer might be?
elecuyer replied:I *think* it's $25.
However, I just looked through all the admin options on the new forum, and found no way to "restore" backup data. Also note that we are changing forum versions as well - so there will be complications.
James, when you set up the new forum, was there a way to import a previous forum's data (including an old version)? If so, I'll spring for the $25 if you want to try it. Otherwise, I'll try to mine the old forums by hand.

Stephen Hussar replied:Ed, I'll split the $25 with you!
Also, just fyi, I've tried searching in Archive.org, and the owners of these forums have blocked themselves from being viewed there.

Well...it's all database-driven, and I now control the database. I haven't seen any import function, but I may be able to via the database.
Feel free to get a backup.
elecuyer replied:Of course, its not that simple.

James Patten replied:Ed and I as admin users have seen a link to migrating this forum to version 3 for the last 6 months. I finally requested it in early May, and they are still working on it.
