New ramp track
« on: June 13, 2019, 03:57:21 PM »
The railway is building a new ramp track next to the garage to replace the ramp at the end of the Woods track. The new ramp track is being built with 33 lb rail versus the 25 lb that was used on the Woods track. The heavier rail and better roadbed will make bringing in heavier equipment safer. The Woods track will be lowered back down to parking lot level and become a team track.

Work started with replacing the existing culvert under the woods track with a longer culvert to accommodate the switch. The culvert diameter was also increased and the culvert lowered to accomodate the new drainage in the parking lot and the bigger ditch next to the carbarn.

Start of the ditching next to the carbarn and building up the roadbed for the siding.

The new parking lot catch basin in the foreground and the trench for the pipe leading out  to the ditch next to carbarn.

The pipe and catch basin in. The orange cone with the grade stake is the center line of the new siding.

Working on the siding roadbed.

The new stub switch for the ramp track being cut into the Woods track.

Looking from the corner of the garage down to the switch.

The bulkhead for the end of the track in the parking lot. The wall is parallel with the front of the bathroom.

We started laying stone down  on the roadbed today until the rain started.

Thank you Brendan for this excellent photo-and-caption explanation of the project.

I'm just curious about the Hitachi backhoe. Is it a rental?

The Hitachi was loaned to us for the car barn extension by Chesterfield Associates. It has since been returned.

Will the Woods Track still curve out into the parking lot, or will it be a straight run up along the tree line?

Hi Dana,

I sent you an email.  We’re very short on crew this weekend but we may be able to salvage some work on the new ramp track.

Thanks,
Jason

Thank you Brendan to keep us posting through those pictures and captions. Clay soil is by no means easy to work .

The switch was finished this morning and rail started going down. Dana is going to lead a spiking crew Saturday on the new track.

Loading rail from the stockpile between the main and north yard lead.

The switch all done. The switch had to be ballasted using the tip car before the rail train could cross over the switch.

Setting ties out on the grade.

The view from behind the garage.

Setting out rail.

The woods track is in the foreground and the rail crane is on the new ramp track.

The end of the day. The rest of the rail should go down tomorrow.

Are we using the old #60 rail or the left over #33?

Elmer Gantry sure is proving to be a great addition to the museum's equipment.

Thanks for the pictures and captions. That very seviceable track will be soon completed and I'm sure the carbarn extension will be over by October.
