Photos along the main line
« on: May 21, 2019, 07:34:21 AM »
There is an application called "Mapillary" which allows users to take (a LOT of) photos along a route. I've done that for the WW&F's main line, as far as the first crossing past Top of the Mountain. Speaking of which, what is the name of that crossing? Oh, and you'll see some wisps of smoke from the steam engine. Detracts from the accuracy of the photos, but adds to the romance. Anybody can take photos like this. All it takes is a cellphone with a good camera and the Mapillary application.

Enjoy!

All I see is a blue line. No photos. What am I doing wrong?

Neat! I see that Mark Edry and I are immortalized working on the telephone post that is part way down the slope from TOM to what I hink is called "Fossel Crossing."

I like that, nice view of the railroad. That must play in both directions or in the reverse order it was taken? That would be nice to do on some of the other parts of the old road beds of any of the railroads we discuss on the forum. Much better if the brush and trees have been cleared but a virtual walk on an old roadbed would be nice for those who can't do it in person.

Informally, that crossing has been refered to as Judy's Road. We will have to formalize a name before the line goes into service.

Dave, there should be two windows, one with a picture and one with a line (several lines) that have dots. The dots are the locations of pictures.
Mike, I've added the crossing names to OpenStreetMap, and now there's one more.

And I'll confirm John and Mark did excellent work.  I tested that post jack with a successful call to dispatcher Jason on Sunday of Spring Work Weekend.

Thanks Russ.  Nice addition to chronicling our Museum's progress.

In regards to Mike Fox post #4, I think "Judy's Crossing" is a very fitting name for this crossing and should be so designated.

Russ;
I initially looked at it on my work computer which explains a lot. It works fine on my iPad. Thanks.

Russ, Thank you so much for posting such an interesting app. I must say that it's the first time I really discover the whole ROW its curves ,grade crossings and grades. Moreover I can enjoy the scenery  and the close environment of the main. Great! I'm going to watch it a lot of times so I can spot all the details.

Really interesting.  As you approach Trask Crossing you can see a car cross.

I rode on the back of the work train recording a sequence. Because I was on the southern end of the train, you can't see the very end of track. There were "three" flatcars (Elmer is three flatcars long but there was nothing under the northern extension), #52, and the caboose. In reality you can't see the bridge from the northern end of track. BTW, you can't see the bridge from the southern end of track either.  ;)

This is the northern part of it: https://www.mapillary.com/app/?lat=44.10001221781374&lng=-69.62127899129553&z=18.952953145047402&focus=photo&pKey=uwwjiii_WAav50pBRaOLMA

The southern part, starting at Sheepscot: https://www.mapillary.com/app/?lat=44.06115275443642&lng=-69.62417749112711&z=18.40065783329098&focus=photo&pKey=2BukD7zhMOltJ_6-pibSAA
