May 2019 Work Reports

Zack made 4 or 5 pallets to put firewood on. They can only be 3 Ft. wide as they go between the tracks behind bay 1,2,3. Some split wood was brought over also. It's been very wet since the Spring work weekend. None was split after last Sunday. Mike brought a pick-up truck of soft wood to be split. Hope to make more pallets next Sat.

With all that split wood, isn't there some concern that at least some of it will rot before it can be used? Doesn't it have to dry for some months before it can be used? I guess I don't have a very clear idea of how much is consumed for each fire-up.

It's all the hardwood removed from the 1400 Ft. of roadbed last year, Most of the 20 pick-up truckloads were given away. We now have to make room for the wood from the rest of the roadbed. Were putting up on pallets to help keep it from rotting. On warmer winter days they can use it in the stoves to save on buying coal. We also have some good hardwood to be cut at Alna Center for the parvillion.

By the way,Mike cut most of that wood himself I think, During the winter most of us cut North of the bridge. Spring and summer most of us worked on the bridge.

We cut a lot of that wood to the smaller size so it would be easier for Fred to load.

Does 205 have car brakes?  I couldn't tell from all the photos.  If not, are there plans to add them?  It seems to me that MNG would want their only flat car they could load and park somewhere.  We know how useful such flats are on the WW&F...

I got One pile of split wood all relocated, Will do another small pile tomorrow then clean up the area before splitting more. Got to get the wood out of there as some of the clay and dirt that's going to be removed at the car barn site will be put in that area for future fill.

I think we can find a better spot for that filll. We are trying to clear that area to make way for a coal pile.

Anticipated work for Saturday May 11:

* Mother's Day Tea - the noon train will carry participating patrons to Alna Center for their tea.  Regular shoulder service otherwise.
* Shop organizing
* Mountain Extension tamping?
* Work around Sheepscot - wood splitting, car barn extension prep.

This evening 4 - 7 Maine Narrow Gauge has their Annual Meeting, at the Portland Company complex in Portland.  I believe Jason is presenting during it.  This is why the board meeting was moved.  All WW&F members invited.

One way or another tamping on the mountain will be happening. Led by either Dana or I. Any chance we can coordinate a load or two of stone sometime on Saturday for the "Big Dip" near Fossil crossing.

It would be best to get the stone early in the morning on Saturday (or on a weekday) as Mothers Day Tea is at Alna Center from noon to 1:30.

I can skip up with the tractor and load a flat on their way north.

Still chipping away at the wood pile. I might see the end if I use a spy glass. Hopefully a couple of weeks it will be done if not to much rain and help.
