May 2019 Work Reports
« on: April 30, 2019, 10:36:49 AM »
Hey everyone,

With a busy summer ahead, I hope to do a few Summer Work Weekends to coordinate some track work on the mountain, main line work, and Fall Work Weekend Prep. If we can, I would like to start with track work this Saturday. My thought is if I am able to be there, or someone else is willing to coordinate I hope to ballast the south end of Cockeyed Curve, and hand tamp one problem area near MP 6 that is a single joint. Ideal crew size would be 7-8 people. This would hopefully allow us to lift 2 speed restrictions on the main line.

Once that is done, we can regroup and see what others would like to do. There is much to be done this year and with your help we can definately keep things rolling along and shorten up the track project list.

Thank you everyone again for all your help this last weekend. A lot of work was done in just a few short days.
Track laborer, roadmaster, general laborer, and much more.

Anticipated work for Saturday May 4:

* The beginning of regularly scheduled train service.  Trains at 10:30, noon, and 1:30.
* As Joe noted above, track maintenance needs to happen: ballasting south end of Cockeye Curve and tamping a joint near MP 6 can lift some slow orders.  Plus tamping near Sheepscot Mills switch.
* Shop work: I think boxcar 67 is going to make its way in for finishing work.  Not sure if electrical work will occur, or other things in the shop.
* Annual Meeting: At 2 at the Alna Meeting House.  The 1:30 train can deliver you to Alna Center, from which you have to walk.  You'll have to find your own way back, however.
* Board meeting: after the annual meeting, back at the Percival House (instead of on the 11th).

I noticed that the museum website (under "Events") shows the Annual Meeting as happening at 1:00 rather than 2:00. Is 2:00 the correct time?

You know, I always mess up the time.  I'll have to look at the ballot.

Then 2 PM is the correct time, and I'll fix it tonight on the website.

In which case you can take the noon train up, walk to the meeting @ 2 with time to spare and make your way back to Alna Center in time for the last Southbound train at around 3:30. Don't forget to put the flagstop signal out!

the last Southbound train at around 3:30.

Full Sheepscot Valley service does not begin until Memorial Day Weekend - there is no 3:00pm departure from Sheepcot to Top of the Mountain and Return. Thus, there is no last Southbound train from Alna Center around 3:30pm.

As of today, about half of the 1422' of track from last year has been lifted and tamped but will need another surfacting next year as things settle out. Overall what has been tamped so far is a vast improvement on what was there. Some areas we ran out of stone so we will need to get more stone in place and lift it again. Prior to that happening I hope to finish tamping the mountain. I estimate we have 1 or 2 days left of tamping depending on the size of the crew.

Thank you to everyone who helped us do track work today.

Work done on Saturday May 4:

* Track: tamping on The Mountain, as reported by Joe above.
* Shop: unfortunately I didn't venture in when anything was occuring, so I can't report on what happened.
* Annual Meeting at 2:00 at the Alna Meeting House, we were out in about 35 minutes.
* Board meeting started early at 3:40 and still went on past 7:00.
* The Cincinnati mill machine was shipped away today.
* A good count of passengers for the first day of regular operations.

Had to work this morning so I got to Alna just in time for the Annual Meeting.

Flat Car 205 from the Maine Narrow Gauge had some copper napth applied early in the week, then was painted and numbered Friday.
