Interesting engine. It looks like the headlight is run off a battery in the cab, as I see no turbine. Where is the coal stored?

Those are great photos.  There is a book here waiting to be written.  "Two Feet the the Mills"?  John, I was told by the old SDW fireman I used to visit (30 some years ago) that quite often the engineer was also fireman and that he had to get out of the cab to fire the engine.  Maybe the coal was kept inside the cab on the fireman's side?  It seems as though it didn't take much of a fire to keep those little engines going.  Neat.

If you look at the left side of the cab in the photos Mike posted above, there appears to be a small door on the side. Perhaps that's where they loaded coal into a small bunker on the left side of the boiler. Many small industrial locomotives had a similar bunker on that side of the boiler since they were arranged for one-man operation. Some even had both injectors on the engineer's side. Others didn't even bother with a bunker; rather, the coal was just piled on left side of the cab floor.

The Glen Alden Coal Co. mine at Wanamie, PA didn't carry any coal on the locomotives. Their runs were short and they fired from piles along side the tracks, or they just took some from the coal jimmy next to the locomotive.

Thanks for digging up those links, Mike -- pretty neat to see how those looked back in the day!

With regard to locomotives using small amounts of coal...I rode around behind one of the Henschels at Boothbay recently...I don't think Jason put a scoop of coal into the firebox the entire time I was there!

On Monday, December 14 the S.D. Warren engine at the Boothbay Railway Village was moved from its roadside display into the engine shop where a restoration will be started. The work will be a volunteer project starting right after the first of the year. Brian Fanslau will be lading the volunteers for this project.

It is not yet decided if it will be restored to its as new condition, or as it was in its last service days at SD Warren.

This will be a long project, there is no specific funding for it so work can only be done as volunteers are available and as donations come in. Obviously donations would be very welcome.
