October 2018 Work reports
« on: October 01, 2018, 03:31:07 AM »
We have a busy week ahead of us, with many arriving early to help finalize the prep for Falll Work Weekend. Today a center line will be resurveyed along the rail grade, and a marker placed at the end of our goal. (Would hate to see us get ahead of ourselves. :) ) Crane should be finished later today, and hopefully recieve a load test in the afternoon.

Other work later this week include testing out the crane, loading the track building train, finish preparations for work at Sheepscott, etc.

I have a late morning flight out of Detroit on Wednesday. Due to a long layover in Chicago, I'll arrive at Manchester at 5 pm. That means I won't get to the museum until after dark Wednesday evening.

Anticipated work for weekend of October 6: Fall Work Weekend.  Do I need to spell it out?

* Track laying - goal of 1400 feet
* Percival house - build a new deck and stairs
* Utilities - dig the trenches for utilities between future drop site and car shop and Percival house
* New parking lot - clearing for the new lot
* Food, food, food - feeding the troops, I think Nancy Weeks is in charge of that.  She may be doing all 3 meals again this weekend.

Going on elsewhere nearby this weekend is the Damariscotta Pumpkinfest.  The downtown gets decorated with massive pumpkins that have been carved, drawn or painted on.  Just don't go in town during the day as you won't find any parking.

James...
In the spirit of clarifying your FWW agenda (blame my TV journalism background), especially per new volunteers' expectations:
*Percival House--build a new deck and stairs at east entry, replacing demolished handicap ramp.
*Utilities--dig the trenches for utilities connecting future drop site (at new power pole?), car shop and PH.
*New parking lot-- clearing where, exactly?
Good luck, all!

Paul,
New parking lot will be west of the current one.

Ditch for utility conduit will be between the car shop and the house. It will not go to the pole. Not this time anyway.

They have removed the old deck and handicap ramp from the east side of the house, that is the side that faces the station and shop, and will build a much smaller deck and stairs for emergency access.

Unfortunately I will be unable to attend the work weekend on Saturday and only do a half day on Friday. :/ Hoping to be there all day Sunday, but that will depend on work.

I won't be there until Sunday afternoon, but I hope to extend the magneto phone line northward for about 1000 feet from the TOM phone box. This will involve retrieving the reel stand and 1000" (?) roll of 14-2 UF-B from upstairs in  the shop building and bringing it to TOM. The next step will be running it in the eastern ditch beside the rail. This is the same technique that Jason and Steve Z used in extending line the last several hundred feet to TOM. Any help would be appreciated.

Wish I could help you. Worked as a teltech in a closed Abq chip/wafer plant with over 2400 'stations', was converting over to personal computers. Never a dull moment.

I can't be there on Monday.  Have appointments in Augusta.  Perhaps we will finish on Sunday.

Someone bringing the reel stand and reel to TOM on any day before Sunday would be a great help. Thanks!

Everything is officially all loaded up for first thing tomorrow. We will leave your phone line and reel at ToM Friday morning.

FWW Day 0 (Thursday):

Joe coordinated a crew to roll out the road cloth.  There is now road cloth to past the pinch point, alas none under the 150 feet of track they put down yesterday which is quite muddy.  Then some track was lined.  Meanwhile back at Sheepscot the construction train was loaded up with rail and ties.  Additionally there was a crew in the shop working but I didn't see on what.
