Although speaking from the perspective of the fireman and not a photographer, this years Picnic seemed a lot more action packed than previous picnics.  I believe we have Stephen and Stewart to thank for the extras this year.

Really all I did was take pictures...Mike on the other hand risked life and limb (bees!) building the track for the handcar many months ago and Stewart bought and donated the awesome truck!

Thanks for the excellent pics Steve. I wish I could have been there. Did you, or anybody else on the forum shoot any video of the picnic?

Joe,  I don't think Steve had his video equipment with him but there were a number of guys shooting video at AC and HB trestle.  One or two told me that they may post something on youtube.  I'd like to see how it looked at Alna Center.  You don't see as much when you are in a scene as when you are watching.

Hats off to Dana, James, Jason, Josh R. and the rest of the crew that ran trains.   Photo run-bys are nice but this year we recreated a number of classic scenes with line side props.  The image of a mixed train coming to a station and setting out a box car on the siding is a good start.  When you add a local farmer backing his vintage truck up to the car with men loading crates into the truck you recreate something that that happened everyday back in the 1920's and 30's.   The scene of a section crew putting their hand car on a set off while the train comes through is another wonderful look at the past.  It's something that passengers saw all the time years ago.  Last weekend was the first time I have seen it on the WW&F.  Thanks to Mike Fox and Steve Zuppa.

Wow, great scenes.  The 're-enactments' really make it special.  Railroads were certainly about more than just a train.

Thanks!

The engineer seems impatient at Alna Center. It's a good thing Shack took the day off or he'd be pacing, looking for 'bos.

Great shots guys.  For those of us who couldn't make it to the picnic we still are able to share in some of the ambiance that was created.  Thanks again.

Steve and Matt's photos of the "scenes" are excellent. They illustrate the potential of the museum to educate the public about the two-footers and the part they played in everyday life in Maine a century ago. Think Williamsburg. If we could figure out a way to stage these scenes place on a regular basis, we could certainly sell ourselves as more than just a train ride in the woods.

I think there is great potential to develop a relevant educational activity on our railroad that could attract school groups, for example. Teacher guides could be prepared to facilitate advance preparation by teachers, as well as short lectures or discussions to be delivered by volunteers or docents during the visit.

I agree. There is a need for us to accomodate the "daisy pickers" and the families with the short attention span kids ,just to pay the bills but once in a while, with not much more than our usual effort, we could shine. The railfan community already thinks we're special. We could also appeal to the school groups and the historian. 1910 Days, anyone?
Steve
Don't ask me. I only cut the grass. Oops, I don't even do that anymore.

1910 Days, anyone?
Steve
I'm up for that!
Imagine eventually a day long school outing that included:
a) following a freight parcel from the "railhead" at Sheepscott to truck at Alna Ctr,
b) a working TOC sawmill,
c) possibly picking up some sort of produce from AC for delivery to Sheepscott....
(something YUMMY!)
