Victorian Christmas 2017
« on: October 21, 2017, 08:38:09 PM »
I'm hoping to make my first visit to the museum for Victorian Christmas.  Are there any cost effective hotels in the area?   Would be 2 couples.  Anything going on at the museum Friday afternoon or Sunday morning?   Would like to make a weekend of it.
 Thanks
 Rick

There are some lodging suggestions on this thread:

(The Wiscasset Woods Lodge will be closed during Victorian Christmas.)

I suspect that there will be preparations for VC underway on Friday. Nothing formal, but you may want to stop by before it gets dark. That will also give you some time to explore the museum campus without all the crowds. Likewise I strongly suspect that nothing will be going on Sunday morning, as the volunteers will need to recuperate from Saturday's barriage.

Remember that VC is two Saturdays this year - December 16 & 23.

Also, note that tickets for VC will likely be by reservation this year. Details will be available shortly. The goal is to ease this parking situation and disperse the crowds more evenly across the day. Stay posted!

There is also a Residence Inn By Marriott in Bath, which isn't far from the museum at all. They also have kitchenettes which could save you money on food.

Thanks Guys.  We've both working the weekend of the 23rd so it would need to be the 16th.  Was hoping to maybe lend a hand Friday and then play tourist on Saturday.

While surfing around looking for places to link to on social media, I spotted...

http://www.midcoastmaineinns.com/

Which claims to list availability of B&Bs in the region. Caveat Emptor.

Reservations are now being accepted for all Victorian Christmas trains, December 16 & 23 2017.
Click here to reserve your boarding pass:
http://wwfrytickets.simpletix.com/Event/32102/VictorianChristmas/

Passes are free, but reservations are recommended so to avoid long lines and cold waits for the trip to Alna Center to visit Santa and partake in the magic of Christmas Holiday Cheer.

So far, our on-line literature talks of tickets, passes, and reservations. Multiple words for the same thing seems a bit confusing. Assuming a person gets a ticket/pass/reservation in one's http://wwfrytickets.simpletix.com/Event/32102/VictorianChristmas/ basket, and picks it up at "Will Call", what happens next? Do they get preferred boarding?

"We are now ready to begin boarding our Golden Spike members (ticket/pass/reservation holders)."

At the Nov BOD meeting I heard that they were specifically called boarding passes (which are free) and not tickets (which are paid.) I will yield to other BOD members if that has changed.

Those with reservations pick up their passes at the ticket window, and get guaranteed seating on the train that they reserved.

Those without reservations are given passes for the next available train, up to that train's capacity.

We are encouraging visitors to make reservations, but will be holding passes for each train in order to accommodate those who did not know to reserve seats in advance.

Then the train crew just boards the passengers with the appropriate boarding pass for that train.

@Jason - please chime in if I don't have this right.

An operative change (actually started during Easter Eggspress) is that we will form a boarding line only for the next train.  Only folks with a boarding pass for the next train will be in that line, like waiting for a specific movie at a theater.  We’ll have signs and volunteers that help folks understand that, and will have activities (such as Eric’s model trains) to give folks something to do since we don’t want them waiting in line till the right time.

Everyone in a boarding line for a specific train will need a boarding pass for that specific train.  It doesn’t matter how they got the pass (ticket booth walk-up line, will-call line, or black market).  Once in the line with the correct boarding pass, all are equal.

The number of boarding passes per train are intentionally a little lower than the actual capacity of the train, so we have a little wiggle room for misunderstandings.

The total number of boarding passes gives a total event (both days) capacity of 1600, broken down as 900 on Dec 16 and 700 on Dec 23.  These limits were our best effort at optimizing the limiting capacities of all parts of the event: parking, people flow, AC activities, etc.  In years past only train capacity was considered; we’re trying to grow beyond that mentality.

We have only made 1/2 of the total number of boarding passes available by reservation.  In this way, we reserve a substantial portion of our capacity for folks who don’t know about or choose to use the reservation system.

This is a working experiment; we hope it helps make the event more predictable and enjoyable for visitors and volunteers alike, and we hope to learn from it and make improvements as necessary.

Thanks,
Jason

Now that there is a dance floor :) in the shop will you use that to get people out of the wind?

There are some areas that will have to be restricted but it would make a decent overflow waiting space.

Current plan is to put Eric’s models in there.  That way it can stay up for the week.

See ya

All this, "boarding pass, reservation, ticket," talk is beginning to sound like the airlines.  And we know what that's like.  Or the long ago days of gasoline shortage lines in 1973 with, "odd / even" days, etc.   I suspect many casual visitors will not have heard about the protocol of obtaining a ride. You will have "standby" passes / tickets for them you say, but this begins to sound like a Chinese fire drill.  It will be interesting to see how it goes.

Well people will be entertained - even if they cannot dance.

Will be quite a layout if it fills that space.
