We have a trail on the right of way between the crossing of 218 in Alna and Head Tide Road, which we call Head Tide Trail.

This trail traverses some washouts in the roadbed, necessitating 5 foot bridges.  These bridges were originally built by Fred and others some years ago.

These bridges were in need of significant repair and or replacement.

A regular program this summer has been to perform this work.  Largely headed by Steve Lennox, who is working with a board approved budget, they are about half done.  Steve has gotten help from several including Phil Goodwin, Mark Cheetham, Fred Morse, Randy Beach, and others.

All the 81 square spike holes for the two north yard switches were punched today. The 28 slide plates were welded and the machining for the four switch points were completed.

How do you punch square holes in metal?  Some sort of hydraulic press?

42 more ties were cut to length today, scrap wood on the flatcar was cut to truck length and put in truck to take to the transfer station.

A friendly machine shop a couple of miles down the road has a hydraulic punch that make short work of punching the spike holes. In the past, the owner has been very kind in allowing the WW&F folks to do the work once the machine is set up.

Another bundle of ties were cut to length today and some clean-up was done around the place.

 Allan  replaced the 3 steam valves on the back of the boiler that are used to check the water level to verify the site gauge is working properly.

Work done on Saturday July 29:

* Mountain ROW: Mike and crew built 70 feet of track (safety spiked), then Mike continued excavating the old pipe and prepping for the new pipe.
* ROW mowing: After hours, Mike planned to mow the west side of the track.
* Car shop: The partially completed Jenga pile of ties was completed, and a large beam hoisted into place.  The southernmost and middle posts were removed by chipping out the under support and jacking underneath to remove the rest.  The posts were held in place by bolts on top and bottom, so Zack cut those off. 
* Machine shop: Jay worked on installing air brakes for the tamper.  Alan worked on milling the bottom off one of the switch rails.
* Archives: Linda was scanning pictures.

And this is the result of my after train mowing. I was joined by Ed L. at trasks as some if the guys were looking for me because I had not returned. Mowing is slow going. But DONE with everything Rowmow can reach. This is just North of Albees Crossing.

From Saturday morning before train time:  Fred Morse (right) cutting used wooden guardrail posts down to tie length, and Steve Zuppa (left) loading the cut ties onto the Deere tractor forks so they can be moved and stacked on a flat car.
