In the late 20s or early 30s my Dad worked a tie treating plant in NY.
He said some of the ties if they fell off the barge sank.
He was the guy as a teenager that went into the cylinder when a tie bunk derailed.
I assume he hauled a cable to remove the ones still on the rails then he & his friend would
rerail the offending car. The way he talked they didn't pull one at a time. But maybe they did,
there doesn't seem like much clearance.
It sounded like it happened more than once.
