September 2016 Work Planning

Anticipated work for weekend of Saturday September 2 and beyond:

Saturday starts an extraordinarily busy 9 days for the WW&F: we will be open and operating every day from Sat Sept 2 through to Sun Sept 11, for people from the Narrow Gauge Convention.  So we need all the help we can get with guided tours, brakemen, lunches, gift shop, etc.  If you will be at the Convention and would like to help us man the sales table, please make yourself known.  During this time I'm sure we'll be working on our many projects:

* Turntable
* Boxcar 67
* ROW mowing
* Top of Mountain work

Convention opens Wednesday evening (7th) and closes Saturday noon.  We are running a guided bus tour of the line on Friday, with a visit to the Museum in the afternoon.  There will be free shuttle buses between Convention and the Museum from Wednesday through Saturday, leaving at 9:30, noon, and 2:30, last bus leaves the Museum around 4.

James is spot on about the National Narrow Gauge Convention which draws about 1,500 people.  As it was in 2007, attendees come from other states and countries.  The latest list from convention officials includes people from Canada, Mexico, Australia, Japan, Sweden, France, Switzerland, Germany and the U.K.  There have already been visitors this week that arrived early to tour the railroads on their convention list and we will have visitors from Australia on Saturday.  Many convention goers have been to railroads all over the world so we want to have our operation as neat as possible.

Many records were set during convention week in 2007 and we hope this convention will be even better.

No TOM work this weekend unless some surveying gets done. Dozer is awaiting a part that will be here next week. I am hoping to be back Saturdays starting the 10th, but that will depend on work. We have decided on a track location, so grading can be done during September as well.

Work done on Saturday:

* Track 7: Even though it's been shortened and moved over, it's still the 7th track over.  The track got some ballast.
* Weed cutting: Fred and Dwight did some cutting before the first train and during the afternoon.  PM cutting was around Rosewood Crossing.
* Boxcar 67: Zack was making round and square holes for the roof beams.

We had a number of people that are attending the Convention come today.

While at TOM, Dwight and I also put Caution tape on either side of the washouts down to the slide. We also made some nice burn piles for this winter from what Fred cut.

On Thursday afternoon the trail from Rt 218 south to Trout Brook was cut.
The museum's right of way is now cleared for anyone who wants to take a hike. About 1.5 miles one way.

The museum is open every day till Sunday, so technically every piece of equipment is on display during the NNGC.

I will be at the museum tomorrow from 7-1 to cut grass/brush along the ROW. Most likely at Humason and Albees on the photo sides.

Work done Sunday, Sept. 4th -

* Turntable - The turntable track got more ballast and the low joints were jacked and tamped.  Ballast was also spread around the ring wall where the south yard track will come in.

* Shop - More cleaning was done in the shop extension and machine shop.

* Guests - There were about 80 visitors including people from Australia, Sweden and Austria.  Some were here for the National Narrow Gauge Convention.

As Joe noted, the Museum is open every day this week for the NNGC.  Trains run on the hour 12 noon - 4 pm.  

Thursday and Friday are the biggest days.  The riveting machine demonstration is from 2 -4 pm on Thursday afternoon followed by the photographers special 5 - 7 pm.

Friday is the WW&F bus tour, Albion to Wiscasset with the group having lunch and a train ride at Sheepscot.

If all goes as planned, the Goldenrod Express will depart about 9 on Monday morning, to return to Sheepscot prior to the noon train, or be in the clear for the noon train, then follow it back to Sheepscot.
