Flat Car 1014 - Official Work Thread
« on: June 20, 2016, 06:41:02 AM »
After some discussion as to what was needed at the museum, a recently donated broad gauge car (4'-8 1/2") will become a work flat. Having two of these will help make track building more efficient.

I started by trying to get the slip axle apart. I was not having much luck at home so I took it to the shop at work. I used a band saw and cut the axles to length.

I kept after the slip axle, trying to get it apart whole. I finally cut the axle to length, and used a press after I cut the axle again at the middle. 3000# on the press ( had it to 5000# but got nervous ) and applied some heat to get the axle to separate from the sleeve. I tried the sleeve on the non slip axle and it was too small. Pawed around the shop and came up with a short piece of pipe that the ID was slightly larger, but not quite enough to slide onto the pipe. So next I will clean and polish the two axle ends to get them to fit.

Mike;
Will it be powered by the motor that came with it? Or is the motor bound for something else like Big Joe?

No intended use for the motor yet, but the folks at ROWMOW Mfg promise to try and get it running so we could use it on a future project, or possibly retrofit an old project..

Mike, is it your plan to have this car be similar to the all-steel work flat with the grating deck?

Yes, same size except a different style grating. Should be less give to it.. Trying to keep it about the same size to make it easy to set out of the way if needed.

A little polishing

Very snug fit. Several taps with a hammer to get it on 1/4 inch. Now to polish up the other axle and press them together. May have to warm the sleeve up to get it to drop on.

Finally most of what will be 1014 is in this picture. What is missing? The planned deck. It is stood against a tree outside of my shop, with the lower 2 feet buried in snow. I will try to retrieve it tomorrow, and have everything ready for quick assembly. This car will be essentialy identical to 1005, which is the other yellow metal work flat.

Looking good Joe, I'm sure it will be a welcome and handy addition for the MOW gang.  Can't wait to see the completed unit.
