Great video, Hansel. I really like the graphite smokebox.

Also, where did the new whistle come from?

I opened my Sunday Newspaper, the San Francisco Chronicle, and found an AP photo of Monson #3 and the Polar Express Train with the headline - "Full Steam Ahead for Polar Express' Holiday Season" on page A11.

"Steam emerges from a vintage 1913 locomotive as the Polar Express gets under way Friday in Portland, Maine. The popular train, based on the well-known children's book, has rides scheduled throughout the holiday season for about a mile and a half along Casco Bay to the 'North Pole' ".

Thanks for sharing the "Concert of Whistles." Hansel.  It brought back memories of the 1967 Christmas at Edaville - four trains running and at least B&SR #7 & #8 had two whistles on each. #5 was also steamed up, on standby I guess, near the turntable.  Six different whistles echoing across the bogs - a sound to remember.  Got a cab ride in one of the Monsons, and as we passed through the pine forests I thought of what it must have been like back in the day, in Maine.  This was the day when my love of the Maine Two Footers really began.  That was 48 years ago and 48 years before that all 5 lines were still running, just finishing up their best years.

For anybody that doesn't follow the MNG or the B&SR restoration pages on facebook, Monson #3 will be running school vacation trips next week on the regular schedule.

Trains will run every hour on the hour from 10-3 Sat 2/13 through Sun 2/21 (excluding Thursday).

Come out and see some winter steam!

I thought #3's repairs were mostly paid for by the SR&RL group.  Is the locomotive going to be shared between the two groups?  What is the agreement concerining the shared use of this locomotive if any?

Since 3 was all but ready to go in late October, it was agreed upon to take her down to Portland for inspection and shakedown runs. Once the engine's in Phillips it's difficult for most of our mechanical volunteers to make day trips to help with any sort of bugs, so the engine was broken back in running Polar trips.

The locomotive is going back to Phillips in May so that the SR&RL group will have her for their summer/fall season. The reason we didn't send it in January is the general lack of accessibility to the area until the ground can firm up in the spring.

Bill,

Thanx for the information.  The SR&RL is a neat operation also.  Wayne and I visited a few years ago and we had a wonderful talk with the guys up there.

Excellent video Hansel. The mixed trains and passenger trains were the most interesting.

MNG did a nice job with passenger, freight and mixed consists.  That 10 car train is crazy!

Good video Hansel, thanks for posting.

p.s. Nice "Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad" style logo for Downeast Rails.

I'm curious, does the SR&RL railbus still have its original Reo engine, or was it re-motored at some point?

Thanks. I thought I'd remembered hearing something like that but wasn't sure.
