Anticipated work for weekend of October 4:

* Work weekend prep - Mike will start digging for the foundation of the car shed.  Jason's been working on the "panel" for the TOM north switch, that may continue on Saturday.
* Loco 9
* Percival basement

It's the weekend between two big weekends, which means volunteers will be light on the ground.  Help with train crew would be most appreciated.

Work done on Saturday October 4:

* Pole barn - Mike started digging for the concrete posts and pads for the pole barn - and immediately ran into clay.  The Kubota handled it, but we saw Mike bouncing around a lot on it.  Eight posts were put in for the west wall.  The trench was refilled because we're supposed to get a good amount of rain tonight.
* Loco 9 - Marcel continued working on the cab roof.
* Basement - Fred did clean up in the basement of some of the wood scraps and so forth.

Work done Sunday, October 5th -

The day started with rain but cleared early, becoming sunny and 65.  There were about 50 visitors including people from ME, NY, PA, RI and Germany.

* #9 - Marcel worked on the cab roof.

* Comm - Brendan and John M. did some major work on the railroads' crank phone system lines.

* Track -  Two mainline switches (one for the lower and one for the upper yard) were oiled and a new switch lock was installed on the upper yard south switch.

Anticipated work for weekend of October 11

Lessee - something big is happening this weekend, can't quite put my finger on it.  Maybe it will come to me.  Oh yeah!  It's Fall Work Weekend!  Friday! Saturday! Sunday! Monday!  Work work work!  Weather forecast promises sunshine for Saturday through Monday and maybe Friday as well, temps in the upper 50s during the day.

* Paint restrooms and garage
* Loco 9
* Track extension at Top of the Mountain.  The primary goal is getting mainline and siding built and reconnected, secondary goal will be ballasting.
* Meals provided by Sue Longo's kitchen crew
* Pole barn erection. 
* Other projects can be thought up, I'm sure, if needed.

Friday evening there's a board meeting.  Not sure where it will be at this point.  All members welcome to listen in.

This week -

* Outreach - A school group visited Sheepscot monday.

* Work weekend prep -
 
>Kegs of spikes and track bolts arrived

>More work was done for the north Tom switch including spiking rail and making parts.  Parts include slide plates and J plates. The shop crew included Jason, Bob L., Jonathan, Phil and Steve Z.

>Brendan took the logs to the mill.  He will return with beams for the car storage building.

>12 gallons of paint arrived for the restroom building and some was applied to the front of the structure.

>Food - Fred, Sue and Cindy all purchased food for the next 4 days.  Sue spent a couple of days setting things up in the house.

>Ties - Joe Fox cut over 170 ties including two head blocks for the north ToM switch.

* Engine 10 - Bernie brought the newly restored whistle for the locomotive.  It will be installed this weekend.

*Car storage building - Jeff Verney stopped by to survey the job. H will bring his excavator Friday morning.

*There was progress on other projects this week but this list provides the highlights.

Day 1 of work weekend:

* Track - laid 150 feet of mainline, 60 feet of siding.  A crew back at Sheepscot was working on the switch timber assembly.  I think the north switch panel will be going up tomorrow morning.
* Loco 9 - Marcel on the cab, others on the engine itself, mostly piping.
* Pole barn - Contractor Jeff Verney was brought in for the east wall footings, dug out the trench in about 90 minutes, then left.  The rest of the day was spent putting in the footings and filling up the trench.  Brendan arrived with the lumber for the pole barn.
* Kitchen - Some great food was put on for lunch and supper.
* Board meeting - held in the gift shop.

Almost 60 people signed the book today.

The road cloth at the North end is to be used under the siding. From the culvert we put in, North. And where the camp road is crossed by the main and the siding. Hoping to keep the mud below it in the spring..

Yesterday we placed the last two 4Ft. cement posts and filled the huge hole where the stump dump was located. That took half a day, then we started putting the 8 inch by 10 inch timbers on top of the East wall posts. We got seven 10' up by quitting time.

We ran three trains also. We had a pretty good sized crew for only one week after the fall work weekend. If anyone can remember the sequence of events this past weekend please update us for what was lost.

Marcel was working on #9's cab.  Looks like he's nearing completion of the roof.

Curious what was involved to get those two cement posts set.  I imagine it took a lot of digging, pumping and new gravel to provide firm footings for those posts.
What–me worry?

Hi Bill,

Jeff Verney came back and dug the debris out of the hole, backfilling with crushed rock.  Zack set up a pump last Friday to remove the water from Wednesdays' rain.  Saturday morning we ran the strings and hand dug the hole to set the level for the concrete pedestals.  Mike set the pedestals with the excavator and back filled with sand.  Zack and I back filled around the pedestals by hand to ensure plumb.  When the fill was high enough to protect the peds, Mike and Fred worked together bringing fill and spreading it.  The southwest corner is a serious mud hole (do not walk on the fill) but will be fine when it dries out. The area between the building and spur has been cleaned out to be ready for delivery of the roof trusses.   In the mean time we will continue working on the east side and can set some of the west side posts at the north end.

Anticipated work for Saturday October 25:

* Pole barn: Dry out after this week's rain.  Set more of the headers on the east wall.  May start on the west wall timbers.  I think the rafters may arrive this week.

A little clarity Bill, when Jeff backfilled with the stone, he left a 4 foot trench. The corner post was high, so Stewart started digging. It was much like shoveling ballast, covered in peanut butter. Once the lines were run, we started to set the bases. Then the pedestals, followed by the hand shoveling of sand around the pedestals. Luckily, we got this done last weekend, because the ground will be too wet to run machinery in that area this weekend.
