Anticipated work for weekend of Sept 20:

* Loco 9
* End of track trackwork: The track at the end needs jacking, tamping, and lining to be in the proper position for Work Weekend.  I'm going to run a crew Saturday morning, if there's enough people (3 or more) to do so by 8 AM.
* Work weekend prep: cut up more ties
* Percival House basement work

Work done on Sept 20:

* Loco 9 - Marcel worked on the cab, Leon on the ash pan.
* Ties - The flatcar load of ties was delivered to the north end and stacked.  The tie ends were either dumped roadside for free pickup or stacked for blocking.
* Percival House - Zack started working on the bathroom in the basement, on walls and wallboard around it.
* Mowing - Fred mowed the east side of the track at Sheepscot, using the mower then weed whackers.  I mowed (with the mower) in the area that will become the car shed.
* Work weekend prep - We took a delivery of concrete pads and posts for the car shed this past week.  We have stone on order, a load will be delivered to Sheepscot and five loads to Alna Center.

There will be no Foxes in the pumpkin patch this year  :(   One thing I hate to miss is an event. Not just because I can't help, but I don't get to see the pleased guests as they leave. Anyone that has not been to or worked one of these need to. It is just a pleasant feeling to know that you were part of the reason those people were smiling when they left.

ROWMOW Project for the future: build a regulator.  At least. A 5 foot, rotary broom (road type) driven by a gas engine and set to about an 45 degree angle.  Use it to sweep ballast off the tie tops.  It would help to keep the rail "feet" dry.

Ken,
I was thinking about a ballast regulator yesterday, it would have made things go faster.  The ties are clean because the regulator was my arm ... it's reminding me this morning!

I have dealt with those types of brooms before. Had to change the bristles one time on one of my companies brooms. Talk about getting poked by a porcupine. I think the broad gauge uses rubber tubes of some sort.

This Week -

* Car storage building - (1) The concrete pedestals for the posts arrived. (2) Zack set corner batter boards to run strings from.

* Upper Yard - A load of crushed rock was delivered and the spur track was ballasted down to the reverse curve. On Friday, Joe Fox and crew jacked and tamped around the north switch.

* Work Weekend Prep - More ties were cut and loaded onto a flatcar.

* TOM - Switch timbers arrived, were cut and taken north.  The south switch was built and mostly spiked in so small equipment could travel over it.  (see ToM thread and fb for photos).  A former MEC switchstand was donated.  It was retrieved from Wiscasset, cleaned and soaked with pen oil to free up the rusted parts.

* Track Maint - New track bolts were installed on a joint near M.P. 7

* Visitors - This week we had visitors from England, Russia and Switzerland.

* AAPRCO Convention - A group from the Private Railroad Car Owners Convention in Portland visited Sheepscot and toured the shop.  In the group were people from FLA, NC, KY, CA, OR and a man from England.

* Fall Festival - Steve Z., Bob L. and crew set up the tent for the musicians and built the steps/platform for the hay ride.  Steve Z., Dawn Fox and Cindy Rhine shopped for childrens games supplies.

John,

You are quite correct about using "used" air hoses with glads cut off.  You can buy hose sections for a lot of money but used hoses are free.  Have changed many a "hose" on numerous Kershaw regulators.  Not Fun.........   On the other hand the amount of back breaking work it saves in dressing ballast is well worth the investment.  We would have to find a very small regulator, but I think ROWMOW Mfg and engineering staff would be able to reguage one as well as cut down the broom width.
