I imagine it must be pretty loud in there under full load.

That isn't the control stand or air brakes that were on the locomotive when built.
It should be a 24RL brake.....not a 26L

And it should have a Hancock air whistle.....

And yes James....noise reduction was not of prime concern when the covered wagons were built.

We have the former New Haven 2005 (oldest remaining FL9), 2049 and 2059 (the newest FL9 and final F unit built) at the Railroad Museum of New England.  Their current numbers are NH (Conn. Dept. of Transportation) 2002 and 2019; and Metro-North 2033.  Getting the former 2059 took 19 years of effort but we managed to keep it from various rebuild programs somehow, through friends within MN and MTA - it retains 24RL brakes and is probably the most original FL9 remaining. Eventually we hope to restore it to its as-built appearance. We are just completing an overhaul of NH (CDoT) 2019 to its 1985 NH - painted appearance and it will be participating in the "Streamliners at Spencer" event at the North Carolina Transportation Museum 29 May-1 June.
The other day at the RMNE we talked of the remaining FL9s and came to the conclusion that about 23 remain out of the original 60 - not bad for 54 plus year old diesel locomotives.
