New Color Scheme Available (beta!)
« on: December 05, 2008, 08:38:40 AM »
Some would say that I've been having way too much fun. I'd like to think that I'm learning a useful technology for my work...

Regardless, I made an attempt to make this discussion forum match the color scheme of the main WW&F web site. This morning, somehow everyone's scheme was set that way - I have switched everyone back. But since the cat is now out of the bag, I'll take opinions. (Even if it is "Ugh, I hate it." - I can take it.)

To switch to the new scheme:
Open "Profile"
Under "Modify Profile", choose "Look and Layout Preferences"
Where it says "Current Theme: Forum or Board Default (change)" - click (change)
Click "Erva Theme"

If the consensus is to scrap it, fine. I like it, but that's just me. Or, maybe we can take some of the ideas and move them to the default theme. Or, we could allow both options.

It's your forum, tell me how you like it.

Ed, I can't find Current Theme: Forum or Board Default on my profile. What am I doing wrong?

Oops - I forgot to enable that choice for everyone.

It's now available, near the top of the Look and Layout Preferences page.

There is a fair amount of text that is Black on a darkish color that is very difficult to read and difficult on the eyes.  Back in the 80's I wrote a research paper on the use of color in computer applications and dark on dark is tough.

Other than that, I like it.

The black on tuscan red is a bug. I have to figure out what setting that is.
Ideally, all text will either be gold or white on tuscan red, or black on gold or white.

Like I said, it's a work in progress. Somewhat for my own edification, but also an attempt to make the forum a better representation of the WW&F.

Ed;
I appreciate the effort but the current scheme isn't as jarring as the proposed one. The Tuscan Red is a bit too much. The black lettering on it though doesn't bother me.

Ed,

I like the current colors, as the contrast makes reading easier.  Text on the Tuscan Red was tiring to read.

After spending much of my of my adult life in the sign industry, when I was not railroading, I learned much about contrasts and color balances. Maroon/red is very hard on the eyes and should not be used except as emphasis. This is what several of you have said and I concur.
The most forceful color is yellow background with black copy but most people find it too harsh.
Reverse backgrounds are also very hard to read, i.e.,black background, white copy.
Keeping it as is makes my weepy old eyes happy.

I tried the new color theme and had to switch back to the default. It was starting to hurt my eyes. I like the default color scheme.

By popular demand, I have abandoned the new forum color scheme. It was a fun experiment.

There are at least 1000 different "themes" available for our discussion forum. I'll do some more searching to see if there is one that better meets our needs.
