Smileys? Yea or Nay
« on: December 02, 2008, 10:51:45 PM »
With access to the back end of this forum, I can make a number of customizations. One that I have been considering is to disable "emoticons" or "smileys". For example:
 :) ;) :D ;D >:( :( :o 8) ??? ::) :-[ :P :-X :-\ :-* :'(

I'm personally not a big fan of them (and frankly find anything but a simple :-) rather annoying.)

But, I wanted to get the opinions of others in our online community.

Some other options I could disable include:
Glowing Text
And
Animated Banners
Thoughts?

I notice SOME people seem to over use them.  However, for most of us I think they are a good indicator of mood or intent in the message.  I say we keep them (although if they could be disabled for certain users, I'd say do that).

Can't say it any better than that!

James beat me to it. Sometimes a little smile after a somewhat sarcastic comment does "show" the mood. Overuse is very annoying though. >:(

I agree with James. I don't use them because I haven't figured out out to use them yet... They can be overused. Banners and glow scrip should be disabled.

On second thought (after reading recent postings) get rid of the Smileys.

Some users need to have a daily limit on how many posts they can make. Like three a day instead of three on every thread. However I think that the smiles should be removed.

The "keep one or two smileys" option is ahead at the moment, and if it succeeds, I suppose the next question will be "which one or two smileys?" [imagine the  smiley of your choice placed here]

Is there a means to limit the number of smileys per post so that people don't put in 18 of the authorized smileys?

Unfortunately, not. Unless I really wanted to get deep into PHP script programming.

I voted keep them, they dont bother me. I just think that in the Proper Nettiquite section, there should be a rule that says that you have a limit of 2 smileys to a post, and if you dont obey it, you get a warning.

I personally dont mind the glowing or marquee features ;D

Sorry but I put on a lot of smilys on because It shows the way how I first think of a new post and my last smily is my final reaction to the post! Heres an example... ??? :o ::) :D ;D
