2ft Railroad vs. Car
« on: October 19, 2011, 01:26:12 PM »
I saw this on a few sites, but thought I should share it with our group. I think most of these park trains are 2ft.

The incident pictured occurred recently at a park in New Orleans.

YIKES!
I don't want to say "definitely," but I think most of those park train are less than 2', which makes an impression when you consider that the train in that picture seems to have stayed on the track!

It looks staged to me like they were doing an acccident training. Look under the car in the shadow and you can see a device holding it up.

I saw the news story about this accident, along with several other photos. The news story said the car was driven by an elderly person and accident occurred at low speed. I think what Tom sees under the car is a barricades to protect the crossing signal. There is another one partially visible. What I'm surprised about is that the little train didn't derail. These trains are not all that heavy, and you'd think the impact combined with the car's inertia would have derailed the engine. (I once hit a tractor trailer rig loaded with rolls of newsprint paper with a GP-9, and while we didn't derail on impact, we felt the weight of the truck trying to pull us off the rails.)

It is definitely a 24" gauge train.
I have operated identical trains to this many times.
