January 2011 Work Planning
« on: December 29, 2010, 07:12:28 AM »
Anticipated work for January 1, 2011.  Happy new year!

* I think Fred's eager to start wood cutting.  We still need to "square off" the parking lot, there's still a few spots around the edges that need attention.
* I'm going to start inventorying gift shop sales items.
* We still have the smokebox to permanently attach to the boiler for #9.

Temps are supposed to be upper 30s or lower 40s on Saturday.  What better way to start off the new year right than a day at the WW&F?

To add to James' list:

No 10:  I'm hoping to make a major effort on No 10 this weekend.  I'm hoping to clean warm up (with a small fire) and clean the fire side, remove ashpan and grates in prep for new grates, hydro, drain the boiler, wash the boiler, and remove the rear truck to investigate a rear spring issue.

The warm weather will help greatly, and I'm hoping doing it on a Saturday will garner lots of help, hopefully allowing us to meet all of these goals.  In other words- any and all help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Jason

Joe and I will be there Saturday. One of us will do the dirty work. And it won't be me.

Work done on Jan 1:

* Fred, Steve Z, Mike, Joe, and Stewart started sawing and burning, north of the parking lot where some trees had fallen earlier.  They cut out a maybe a 20x20 patch.
* Cindy and I did inventorying.  We got most of it done.  I thought we were done, then Cindy said "open that sliding door" and I saw a whole bunch more stuff and said "next week!".
* Jason, Joe, JB, and others worked on #10.  I saw the removed grates (they look terrible) and the after-effects of the hydro, power washing, boiler draining, and boiler washing.

An additional note-  The area cleared yesterday is the location of the planned car storage building.  We cleared about 3/4 the size of the building so more needs to be done, maybe later this month.  We are leaving as much hardwood and white pine around the edge as possible.  Some of the remaining trees on the north side will be cut when the center line for the car storage siding is marked off.  The siding will come off of the house spur just south of the culvert and run down to a switch that serves the tracks that go into the car  storage building.

Anticipated work for Saturday, Jan 8

* More tree clearing near the junction of future parking and car storage.
* There's a meeting with Alna emergency responders, in planning for a future emergency drill.

Work done on Jan 8

* There was a fair amount of tree clearing, north of the future parking lot and near where the new car shop will be.  The total area cleared is now a 60x120 area.  My guestimate last week of 20x20 was way off - it should have been more like 40x40.
* Joe spent time lapping valves on 10.
* Jason got some machining time on the casting for 9.

Remembered my camera Saturday. Finally. Lets look at what we did.

Tree cutting. This is a combination of two days worth. Steve Z puts it in perspective.

The future parking area. This has been stumped and leveled somewhat.

Jason and Joe spent some time in the Machine shop. Joe did some valve lapping to #10 and Jason was working on the new frame section for #9. The first shot is with no flash. Second is with a flash. Mill is still running. I also took an overall shot from #10s running board to put some size with the piece.

Lastly, I drove up 218 by the river to show what Eric had done the last part of the year, with help from others. Looking North.

Thanks Mike for posting and remembering the camera.  Sometimes remembering is harder than the work!

Thanks for posting the photos, Mike. Looks like there is about the same amount of snow there as here. A question -- for the two pics north of 218, did you take and one and just turn around and shoot in the opposite direction?

Wayne, yes. There is an old built up access road that crosses the ROW that I stood on. About 1/4 mile North of where the ROW crosses 218. It has been cleared like this all the way to Head Tide.

With a day or two of work and a decent sized crew, all of the smaller trees in this area could be dealt with.  Then there would only be a few larger trees to cut.

Attaboys to all who have worked on the ROW (northern division). Really looks a lot different than I remember.  All we need now is one or two of those 6-wheel ATV's with a dump deck to load up all that lovely firewood for the building stoves.

Keep those progress photos coming........
