I saw this and thought I remembered seeing these items advertised before.

Note that the phone number in the ad (though a MA number) leads to Beaver Brook...

Is there anything that we need or want?
I would suppose the S&RL car and the trucks would be of use,
as well as the open cars

Jason, how about a spare Plymouth?!!

We were offered the SR&RL boxcar and spare trucks for $13,000.  We declined.  Zack recalled the boxcar being in pretty tough shape several years ago when he saw it, and the trucks were also in tough shape.

Maybe the "Tipper" cars, along with ours, can be used to haul fill to the wash outs and haul out the slide material.  Once we are ready to pass the T.O.M.

I suspect that "Beaver Brook #3" is the Crotch Island locomotive that used to grace the front of our car shop.

The SR&RL boxcar looks every bit as run down as Zack suspected it was.

I understood the SR&RL No. 125 was sold to an individual a couple of years ago. But -- if this is a "fire sale," maybe we should offer $5,000 for the carbody and the three sets of trucks and see what happens.

Maybe the SR&RL 125, restored, could be traded for another car.  Lets see, one set of trucks for a tank/flat car, one set for flanger and one set for a TCDA reefer (tool car).  Interesting?  Who is going to go look at this stuff?

Exactly my thought.
Throw a low bid in and see what happens.
Trucks are rare enough we should not turn a blind eye towards them and the box car could be good trade bait for the WW&F boxcar.
Think ahead folks, they don't make them no more!!

Hi all,

I made one minor edit of one post in this thread where one of our members was coveting a specific piece of equipment at another museum. This is not allowed in our forums. We can, however, speak generally about this collection, whether or not any of it should be acquired by the WW&F.

That having been said, I have been told that the S&RL car is in horrible shape and has virtually no hardware (trucks, couplers, etc.)

The pictures on Matt's site are dated 2004, which would be before the roof collapsed at Beaver Brook. Thus, everything will be in far worse condition now.

Beaver Brook #3 is (I think) now at the Silver Lake Railroad in Madison, NH.

Thanks,

-Ed

I had opportunity to directly inspect this boxcar a couple of years ago during another deal with Mr. Gilbert.  I don't recall Zack seeing it in the recent past so I wonder if James is confusing this a bit.  The car had no hardware, looked ok on one side but was gone on the other.  The car was not then priced as high as now, and was not near worth it then.  Really- any museum capital into a non-WW&F car with no useable hardware and in need of a 100% overhaul doesn't seem worth it.  That's why we turned down Mr. Gilbert's offer.

I do think that Zack has seen the car- during yet a previous deal with the Gilbert's.  Back in the '90's; not sure what it's condition was then or how much it changed in the 15 years or so between our having seen it.

Thank you Jason and James for letting us know that the BOD has inspected the collection in the past and deemed it unworthy for our museum.

That having been said, I do think this might be an interesting addition to our roster:

Personally I'm glad to see the BOD decided to turn this "opportunity?" down.  Too many times I've seen other museum organizations buy stuff because they "had to save it"; only to pay way too much, find out restoration costs are way over their budgets, and eventually it sits out on the back track to rot away with all the other "got to save" projects and they end up with a big junkyard.  I would rather invest the money to build a "replica" car/engine/etc. and know that it will be around for a long time.  Most people who visit a museum don't know or don't care if a piece is authentic or a replica.  Thank you BOD for being prudent about acquisitions.
