As an aside regarding planting trees, we were asked by a model railroading organization that Vic Hamburger was involved with if they could plant a tree in his memory.  We decided to do it, but only once the parking lot was set up so that we could determine where to put the tree.  So one of the first trees will be in Vic's memory.

Planting a tree in Vic's memory is a great idea.  How about allowing members and friends also to buy and donate trees in memory of others?  If this goes down, count me in.

Ken,

Great idea on the tree. I'd be up for buying a tree in memory of someone.

It's nice that Vic Hamburger's model railroad club wants to plant a tree at Sheepscot in his memory.  It would be a fitting tribute to a man who was so skilled at working with wood.

Speaking of new trees ... I think the museum should plant a special tree in memory of Harry Percival or perhaps both Harry and Clarissa.   The tree could be planted on the land that they owned, overlooking the railroad that they loved.   A piece of granite with a commemorative bronze plaque could be placed next to it so visitors will know the significance of the tree.

Whole-heartedly agree with the plaque idea.  I've always liked the bronze ground level ones you usually see on college campuses. Elegant but not overstated.  With Harry's we should make a special effort to find an old brass bearing (worn out - of course) and have it recast for his plaque.  I'm sure he would approve.

I would caution against a bronze plaque, as when metal prices get high these tend to get stolen. We have had metal articles stolen before. A small granite marker would be safer.

Well I was going to suggest a piece of rail with Harry and Clarrissa stamped on the head until I read John's post. To make it a marker, would also make it moveable.

Ok, at the risk of going off topic with this (as it's headded that way anyway,) this brings an idea to mind.
I'm sure a goodly number of members/forum readers remember the Atwood Whistle Post at EDAville. Could we perhaps place a PERCIVAL Whistle post at some key location on the line?

We actually talked about doing this some time ago, at Humason. On the old forum maybe?

For those who are not aware - when the Alna Planning Board received whistle noise complaints from two residents back in 1998, the museum signed a "consent decree" to only use the train whistle when required by federal and state laws, and for emergencies. I believe the agreement is posted in Sheepscot Station.

In that case, said post should/could/would be placed at a location where whistle signals are already required by law.  Wink

Veering even further off topic, some months after Harry died, I suggested to a few folks that no. 10 be named "Harry Percival." Must not have made an impression.....

I am hoping no.9 is named for Harry, a closer connection to him than no.10.  Dale
