I know I'm a bit late to the party, but I was doing some related research and came across this:

Hell, since the last time I came around Alna, I've moved to Seattle, and now I'm a fireman on a 97 year old wood passenger steamship, the Virginia V.  We have a 115 year old triple expansion engine and oil fired boiler.

More 67 deconstruction pictures. Most of the car framing was shot. Every vertical member was rotted at the bottom and everything in the door areas or spots where the exterior sheathing was missing was rotted. One 10 foot section of framing pretty much fell apart when the vertical tension rods were cut. All the vertical tension rods were corroded to the point you could twist the rods off by hand at the sills. Lots of detail pictures have been taken and sketches made of grab iron locations and framing details. The next step is to strip the floor off and flip the frame upside down to strip it down for rebuild. The center sills look like they are reusable. The outside sills and end beams are shot. The trucks need a complete rebuild all the wood parts are no good. Flat car 126 needs a truck rebuild also and the intention is to rebuild both sets of trucks this winter.

Just out of curiosity, would it be possible to get scans of those sketches put online?

It occurs to me that Wiscasset probably does not have Uber.  Accordingly, what is there available for transportation to and from the bus stop?  I'll be arriving tomorrow at about 10 AM.

Hey, thanks, y'all!

It turns out I did not get the job, so I'm free to roam the country!  I'll know the precise date here in a few days; assuming I take the bus up to Wiscasset, could someone possibly pick me up from the bus stop?

Right now, I am waiting on the decision on whether or not I'll be going to get a job down in Texas.  If I do not get the job, I plan to purchase an Amtrak railpass and go explore the country.  If I do this, I'd like to put in a few days working on the WW&F.  The problem is how would I get there from Portland, and where could I stay that is extremely cheap (trying to do this on a budget)?

I do have museum experience, working for many years at the NC Maritime Museum's boat shop in Beaufort, NC.  However, this would be my first time working on the WW&F.

John.

I also concur with the wood block floor.  Having worked in my fair share of shops, I much prefer wood floors to otherwise if I'm to be standing on them for long periods of time.  Also, at times it can be handy to be able to screw to the floor.

Hey, sorry for the really late response!  I wound up losing my job back in June and have been dealing with the fallout from that.  Now that I've sort of got my life back straigh, I'd like to help out.

I just sent Jason a PM, so, let's see where things go.

So, I can't get up there to do much work due to distance (I live in North Carolina).  However, I'd still like to help out.  I at the least can do CAD work, having been a draftsman for a civil engineering firm for quite some time.

So, an takers?

Ahoy!

My name is John Dulaney.  I'm from the original Down East (heh heh), which is the eastern half of one county in eastern North Carolina.  However, my grandmother is from Maine and currently lives in Orono.  I have always had an interest in the Maine two footers secondary to the original Norfolk Southern and Beaufort and Morehead (which was even shorter than the WW&F!).

I have experience in drafting and doing CAD work, so, if that is needed, I can at least help out there.  I'm currently a software engineer at Red Hat in Raleigh, NC.
