I've been following the progress (and a lot is happening) on the EBT.  A recent video posted on the Railroad's Facebook page showed the new owners moving 4 hopper cars that haven't moved for many years.  Many had their side sheets rusted through at the bottom.  I know that a couple of years ago, the WW&F purchased some couplers from there.  I can't believe they're going to save all those rusted out hoppers.  If they do scrap some, does the WW&F need any more couplers?  Also are the wheel diameters somewhere near the size of the 2-foot gauge rolling stock?  If so, it might be cheaper to buy some wheelsets and narrow the axles than to have new wheels cast.

Dumb question - why does the large middle opening look big enough for a rail car if the tracks end before reaching the end of the building?  Are their future plans to continue tracks on out that big set of double doors?

General Discussion / Snowpiercer TV Show

I saw an ad for a new TV show which features a post-apocalyptic ark-like train.  I believe it is adapted from a movie a few years back.  The first episode is tonight (5/17) at 9:00 Eastern time on TNT.  Here's a link for the trailer:

Ted,

I think that part is covered by our Engineering Department.  That's not to say that some re-engineering would be required if somehow a South African Garrett would show up on the property.   :o

A Garratt would need some major re-engineering on the turntable as well.

From the song "Paradise" by John Prine

When I die let my ashes float down the Green River
Let my soul roll on up to the Rochester dam
I'll be halfway to Heaven with Paradise waitin'
Just five miles away from wherever I am

Just read that John Prine passed away on April 7th from coronavirus complications. I really like one song he did about the Appalachian coal-producing region.

Mine arrived a couple of days ago in "almost heaven" West Virginia.  One end was pretty mangled up.  Fortunately the newsletters are also posted on-line.

What's to keep the water in the tender from freezing?  Is there a steam line running through it?

Sounds like another corollary of Parkinson's Law - Equipment collections tend to expand to fill all the available space.

I'm sure this question has been answered in the past but here goes.  Is your time based on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)?  If so, why?  I would imagine Eastern Standard Time since that is where the museum is located.

Alain - In the USA, there's a tradition known as "topping off" or "topping out" when a tall structure is complete.  It involves placing a tree at the top.  Supposedly, the first topping off occurred when the Great Pyramid at Giza was built.

Alain - has anyone looked into converting one of the coal-burning locomotives to burn oil?  Would that placate the environmental concerns?  A tourist railroad in Colorado is in the process of converting one of their historic engines to burn oil.

When I was younger and without my health problems, a railfan buddy and I rode various special excursions all over the Northeastern & Southeastern US as well as one two-week trip to Colorado.  The costs for a couple of those events probably was on par with your Winter Photo Special in 70s-90s dollars.  Fortunately, I had a job with 4-weeks vacation and a very understanding wife.  My regrets?  Only that there were a couple of ones I really wanted to ride but circumstances (marriage, children, finances) prevented it.  My railfan buddy succumbed to a brain tumor and I am pretty much homebound now.  Fortunately, I took photos on each of our adventures and have scanned and cataloged them on my laptop.  Every so often, I browse through the old photos and relive fond memories. Yeah, it might be a chunk of change now but looking back someday you'll have forgotten about the cost and be glad you "went for it".
