Work and Events / Re: Mountain Extension Tree Clearing
« on: February 19, 2018, 08:28:04 PM »
Hi Paul, Entire ROW to 218 is far from being complete as far as cutting the tree's.

Form the south headed north, Section 4 up to location 9 is complete. Plus a very short distance more. Location 9 is the end of planned track work during Fall Work Weekend.  We  stop putting brush to the fire's around 2PM. This is to give the fire's time to burn down before we leave around 4PM. This year we continued to cut tree's and brush past 2PM, so we have many brush piles still waiting to be burned. Both on the south and north ends of the ROW.

Section 6 Location 9 to Section 6 location 13 (trout brook) have not been cleared.  Just a short distance at Location 13, the south side of Trout Brook has been cleared   for work on the south bridge abutment.

All tree's and brush has been cleared in section 7, Bridge site to 218.

We can only burn when ground is covered with snow. During 2017 by the end of February  there was no snow.

Bottom end of the grade in the cut. No level ground to "dump" the ties (for later pickup)that are removed.   Bill, where you have been change out the joint bars.

Leave Sheepcott headed north, go around the first curve and you are headed down Daves Grade. At end of this grade ROW passes under the large electric transmission line.

Last Friday, Dec. 15th. A trailer load of 8 inch wide shiplap cut siding boards arrived at the museum.
The back sides will be treated with a fire retardant before they are installed on the trusses. The front of the boards will be fire retardant treated after they are installed on the trusses.

Bob, The cross beams are bolted below the truss. When you look at a side view of the bridge you will see the cross beams are not located near the ends. That part of the bridge will be located over the abutments

On top of the cross beams are 3 sets of cross timbers, in the shape of a "X".

4 stringers are than put on the cross beams. A lot of cutting has to be done to fit the stingers over the cross timbers.

The 10 foot ties are than lied on the stringers

Prebles will stay where it is now located. Visitors for special events go to this Ticket window to get their boarding pass for the next train North. Track 1 (or A) at Sheepscott Station or Track 2 ( or B) beside the Car Barn.  The ticket agents do have heat, but not much with the window (upper half of the door) open all the time.

One short section (about 6 ties) of the woods track was skipped before the Woods Shed. ROW has a high spot. Clay needs to be dug out before stone is added to ROW

We have a few metal parts that can be reused. Some require work. But not a complete set of metal parts for one box car.

Fred wants to take 52 and a empty flatcar north. Stopping on the way to pick up the used ties that were removed this summer. These ties will be used as ground ties for more tie piles next year at saw mill spur.
There is one pile of ties that is not stacked correctly, plus a few loose ties laying on the ground and this will be corrected.

Plant in June. Harvest now.  About every town had a potato storage barn located near the railroad.
