Title: Seeking pledges for lubricator for No 10
Post by: Jason M Lamontagne on June 23, 2017, 10:43:45 AM
Hello,

There is a lubricator on eBay we'd like to get for No 10.  We are seeking pledges to cover its cost, up to $1000. We have a bid in now at $500- the bidding ends next Friday, June 30, 2017.

This is hoped to be a replay of a lube system we put on 9.  It's an improved lubrication system for some remote parts of the running gear.  Normally these areas are oiled by hand, with great difficulty.  Because of that, they are often poorly oiled (or not at all), and when they do get oil, the tip of the oil can introduces contaminates to the bearing area.  Everyone loves the improvement on 9 (compared to the old way on 10 before removal from service), and have been asking the shop to do the same on 10.

I'll pledge $100.

Please let us know if you can help!

Thanks,
Jason

What is the auction number?  I would like to see it.

I haven't seen the lubricator up for auction but I understand it is very similar to the lubricator installed in no. 9.

I believe I found what Jason is referring to on Ebay.  It might be a good idea for Jason/others to PM those interested folks so that we don't end up bidding against each other.

Almost forgot, we should move this item to the member's only side of the house.

If you find the item, please don't bid on it. As of now, Jason has the one and only bid on it. And because it was miscatogorized by the seller, it is possible that we may get this for a steal.

I am keeping this topic open to the public - since we do have many friends and supporters who read this forum, yet for whatever reason are not museum members. I invite those folks to pledge something toward this (either publically, and/or via a private message to Jason.) I will pledge to purchase a one-year membership to the museum for any non-member who pledges $50 or more toward this purchase.

Thanks, Ed.

We did get an offline pledge for $300.

That brings us to $850- WOW!  That may be enough; we'll see what the auction brings.  In the mean time maybe we can get our pledges up to the full $1K.

Yay for us!

If we get the lubricator for less than our pledge commitments, shall we send the remainder to the 21 campaign?

Bill, since the part in question would be for #10, I think a transfer would be most appropriate.

I believe funds received above the purchase amount will be used to install it on #10, as well as any repairs that need to be made to it. There are a number of copper lines that will need to be run, as well as fittings. Anything extra the board can decide where it should go, 21 Campaign being a real good idea, as well as the Maintenance Fund of #10.

In the event one is found, please do not bid, or advertise it is out there. Send a PM to Jason, and he can decide if it is what is wanted or not.

Upon checking EBay a few minutes ago, it appears we have a lubricator for #10.  I will let Jason make the official announcement if this is the case.
My congratulations to Jason.  I'm sending my pledge in presently to the 21 Fund.

Yes. I can confirm that we are the winners of the eBay lubricator. There will be cost for its refurbishment, plumbing, and installation. I'm not sure how to best earmark your pledge submissions - James or Jason can chime in with that.

This is a great way to fund a few off the cuff, impromptu projects.  I am glad we got the lubricator.  If the pledged funds don't cover the refurbishment, tubing fittings, etc, perhaps we can refresh the funding request.

Hello Everyone,

Thank you all for making this successful!

I'd say pay any way you are comfortable.  Pay pal's fee is minimal, I believe, but a check is less fee, I suppose.  If you prefer pay pal, I can't imagine James would object.

Ira, you may be thinking of using pay pal on eBay.  Jeff was referring to a general money transfer using pay pal.  We used pay pal in this general manner to pay for the iron sheets from England.

I expect the total additional cost to make the lubricator usable to be around $300- $400.  We need to service it, replace all glass and gaskets, run copper lines, make some fittings, etc.

Again, thank you!

Jason

Now that it's ours, are we permitted to see the link to the eBay sale so we know what we bought?

If we send our pledge through Paypal, will they take a cut?

Jeff, yes Paypal will take a cut.  Typically on $100 I believe they take 2.5% - more for smaller amounts, and less for larger.

So who gets to de-gunk, clean, and polish the little gem?  If no takers, I will volunteer during FWW.  I still have leftover cans of Brasso, toothbrushes, and polishing cloths from my military days.

John...I've found that Brasso eliminates watch crystal scratches, abrasions, faster on plastic than glass.  Takes some rubbing, though.
I've heard some people use toothpaste on oxidized headlight bubbles, also has very fine polish in it.

Paul, and how much rubbing do you think I did over 22 years!  You learn every trick in the book and then some.  I can still remember Brasso and toothbrushes to polish the brass floor drains in the barracks latrines during boot camp.  Talk about starting at the bottom!   ;D

What a beauty.  Are 7 ports enough to catch the critical points not easily covered by normal engineer/fireman lubrication?
