Title: NEWSLETTERS!!!
Post by: Ed Lecuyer on March 03, 2011, 01:20:25 AM
I am pleased to announce that a new section of the Discussion Forum is now open. WW&F Museum Newsletters from the past few years are posted for your reference and enjoyment.

The Newsletters section of the Forum is available ONLY to current members of the WW&F Museum. If you are not a member, we certainly hope you will join us. Those of you who are (who also make up the majority of membership to this discussion forum) should be able to see the Newsletters section under the WW&F Railway Museum Discussion header when you are logged into the forum.

If you are a WW&F Museum member and do not see this section when you are logged into your forum account, please email me at ed@spongeawareness.com and I will get you added to the list.

I also know that there are WW&F Museum members who read this forum, but have not set up accounts. I encourage you to do that, as we are planning additional "member's only" benefits for this discussion forum.

A special thank you to John McNamara for making the "proof copy" PDFs of the newsletters available for us all to enjoy.

Thanks!

I should note that you should allow a month or so for new memberships (and dropped members) to work their way through the system.  So if you join today, it will take a while to get back to Ed that you're a member.

I think this section is really neat!!  :D it will be especially nice if some of the older newsletters get posted, like the ones that are hard to find.

The posted PDFs were generated by our publisher, Lincoln County Publishing, and were sent to Allen Fisher, Ellen Fisher, and myself for final review. I have been sending them on to Ed for posting.

Unfortunately, I don't think I have PDFs for issues prior to those posted. However, I do have paper copies back to 1994, so if you or anyone else have any specific requests, I can scan one of the paper copies and send it to Ed for posting. The quality won't be as good as the presently posted ones, due to the scanning step, but they should be adequate. Let me know here or by PM.

I agree, and would certainly be interested in getting access to scans of issues earlier than 2009 - all of them if possible(!).

My Christmas present from my wife last year was the complete run of Trains (1941-2010) on DVD and I'm finding the earlier issues especially fascinating. It's made me wonder about scanning the entire run of the Ffestiniog Railway Magazine and putting it onto DVD as a sales item. However it would be a mammoth task for one person - issue No.1 (16 pages) appeared in 1958, we're now up to issue No.212, and issues have steadily increased in size over the years - every one since I took over as editor in 2003 has had 72 pages...

Ask and ye shall receive.

John McNamara has graciously started the tedious process of digitizing the older newsletters. First up: March/April and May/June of 1994. Each issue takes about 1/2 hour to scan and process. If anyone would like to help, please contact John.

Dave Crow has joined John McNamara in scanning older newsletters. All of 2008 is now available. Thanks Dave!

Meanwhile, everything (except for 2 missing pages) in 1994 has been scanned. Keep an eye in the Newsletter section of the forum for more years and issues as this process continues.

Any members with older collections of Newsletters who wish to help out should contact John as to avoid duplication of effort.

Ed

When I try to access the scans for issues 2005_03, _05 _07, _09, and _11, I'm getting the following message:

>The requested URL /newsletters/2005_11.pdf was not found on this server. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.'<

Could you investigate this problem? I've had no trouble downloading every other scan that is listed.

I'm delighted to be able to see some of the early issues of the newsletter in this format - please pass my sincere thanks to those doing the scanning.

In order to post these newsletters in the easiest manner possible, I am creating the pages with the links in one session. In the case of 2005, the scanners (John and Dave) have not scanned the rest of 2005, yet, so those links are broken.

They'll be filled soon enough.

All of 2005 is now posted.

Dave and John have been scanning at a furious clip, and the results (as of this writing) are:
1994-1998: Complete, except 2 missing pages for Jan/Feb 1994.
2005-Present: Complete.

At the rate they are going, I suspect that the remaining 6 years between 1999-2004 (inclusive) will be available within the next few weeks. We owe John and Dave a great deal of thanks for taking on this task, and sharing their results with us.

An update:
1999 & 2000 are now posted, complete.
2001 & 2002 are coming soon.
2003 is mostly coming soon, except for one issue.
2004 is missing Sept/Oct, but otherwise complete.
2005 - present is posted and complete.

One request. Could these be put into order, perhaps oldest at the bottom, so when you add new ones they will be on top and in order?
Title: Re: New Forum Section: NEWSLETTERS!!!

You can click on the "Subject" heading, and the list will sort in order.

The forum defaults to sort such that the most recent posts are at the top. Once all the Newsletters are posted, I *may* repost them all so that they will sort properly chronologically too.

ALL newsletters from 1994 to the present are now posted for members to enjoy. Thanks to Dave and John for all the countless hours it took to produce these.

If you come across any missing issues, bad links, etc., please let me know.

We would love to have someone step forward with issues prior to 1994. Any takers?

If anyone has newsletter issues older than 1994 and is willing to send them to my office, I will scan them.

By coming to my office, I guarantee they won't disappear at home, and I will ship them directly back to the owner as soon as they are scanned.

Thanks for helping with this project.

A splendid effort!

Having all of this information easily available will make it much easier for historians in years to come – and provide hours of interesting reading for new members.

For me, reading about the work that has gone into reopening the WW&F, especially in the early years, serves to point up the parallels with how we got the Ffestiniog reopened in the mid-1950s. The same basic outlook: 'There must be a way round any difficulty if you only look hard enough'. The same scrounging of materials and equipment – and the same donation of professional and other services by sympathetic supporters. It still goes on on the FR/WHR even now that we have a turnover of several million pounds a year.

Since receiving the WW&F Newsletter is considered a membership benefit, the Newsletter section of the homepage only shows up if the Discussion Forum website identifies you as a WW&F Railway Museum member. If you are a WW&F member and can't see the Newsletter section on the home page, the moderator can fix that for you.

Yes, please email me if you are a member and cannot see the Newsletters section of the forum on the main forum page: http://forum.wwfry.org/index.php

It should appear in the "WW&F Railway Museum Discussion" section underneath "Whimsical Weirdness and Foolery."

Members also should be able to see the "Museum Discussion - MEMBERS ONLY" section, where we discuss items that we do not want shared with the general public.

Yeah, to keep the current newsletters posted in order, I edit the existing entry - rather than create a new one. That's why I post a "public" message whenever the new newsletter comes online.

Plus, it saves steam when the headlight icon isn't lit needlessly.

Dave,

Thanks for the kind words; they are much appreciated.  :)

This is the first time that the WW&F Newsletter will be prepared in color and printed in black-and-white, so I am curious as to how well the pictures will come out in the printed version. I'm also concerned about delivery, as it takes almost two weeks for California members to get their printed copies. Only about 40 people read the electronic copy, and over 1000 read the paper copy. so my enthusiasm about the color electronic copy is somewhat tempered by my concerns about the paper copy.

First, be sure that you are logged into the forum with your username and password. Then click on Home in the bar above, then click the Newsletters section. You can also click this link:

Anyone who is a member of the museum and cannot access the Newsletters, please let me know so that I can verify your membership on the forum and provide assistance logging in, etc.

Terry, no waiting period per-se, however there's no automatic connection between the membership database and this forum; if someone becomes a member and wants to get access to the newsletter they should bug us, just like you did.  Likewise if you were a member and got dropped for non-payment of dues, and had access to this board, you're likely to have access for a long time to come!

I have changed your profile to give you membership.  You should be able to see the Newsletter section now.

Steve,
I found a worn in shim at the Top of the Mountain when I was digging 2 years ago. Grooves where the axle had worn into it because the shim either shifted or the brass broke.

(Fixed..auto correct turned shim to ship)

Well Mike, I guess the episode that caused that was one occasion where the shim WAS a wear surface.....but not for long! Train crew probably uttered a few naughty words.

On your next visit ask Stewart to see the pile of artifacts I dug up. Last I knew they were in the house, but he would know exactly where they are

Hi Paul,

1. On the main forum page: http://forum.wwfry.org/index.php (http://forum.wwfry.org/index.php) in the section labled WW&F Railway Museum Discussion look for the group Newsletters. You must be logged into the forum (and be listed as a museum member) to see this section. I verified that we have you down as a museum member, so just be sure you are logged in.

The current batch of newsletters can be accessed at:
http://forum.wwfry.org/index.php?topic=1454.0 (http://forum.wwfry.org/index.php?topic=1454.0)
IF you are logged in and listed as a museum member.

2. I'm not sure. However, there is a significant time lapse between when the Newsletter is posted on the forum and when it arrives via mail. I have not received my May/June Newsletter via mail yet either (and that time lapse is not unusual.)

I don't believe that the newsletters got mailed until early last week.  Keep in mind the newsletters now go bulk mail, so while it may get to your post office within a few days, it's up to the discretion of the postmaster to distribute.

Ed, James;
Thanks! As far as finding the Newsletters on the forum, dummy me was looking in the "Members Only" section. I did discover my error and found the current Newsletters.
I was thinking that perhaps I was omitted from the latest mailing as I thought I should have received a May/June Newsletter by now. I did check with Rick Sission, who lives in same town, and he hasn't received his either which kind of made me think the newsletters may have only recently mailed out which James has confirmed.

Checking the date of Ed's announcement that the electronic issue was available, I see that it was May 25th. There is a week or so delay while Lincoln County prints, folds, and labels the newsletters. They then deliver them to the post office. I have some suspicion that the post office distribution center in Maine has an "ageing bin" wherein the newsletters are stored for a while. I say this because suddenly, after several weeks delay, but within a day or two of each other, I'll hear from folks in NH, MA, and PA that theirs has arrived. For this issue that hasn't happened yet. According to Stewart, 3500 people follow us on Facebook; according to the view count, roughly 60 people view the newsletter on this forum; according to our press run numbers, the paper newsletter run is 1500.

I missed the announcement for this latest newsletter when Ed posted it, as I and others at work have been busy with a systems upgrade the last three weeks straight.  We just finished yesterday, and it was a very pleasant surprise to receive the hard copy newsletter today.

What a great issue!  I just want to acknowledge and thank John McNamara and content contributors for the ongoing excellent job they do documenting and telling our members of the ongoing progress of our museum with detailed articles on various museum activities.  Our museum does a terrific job communicating via social media/website to members and the public, but this (printed newsletter) is the one medium that reaches and informs all members and is critically important.

Thank you.

I may have confused folks by adding the 2018 section. (It's easier for me to do that now rather than later.) Be sure to click the Nov/Dec 2017 link.
